Field Hockey. Resh Uses Experience Gained in Mexico to Help Bucknell Field Hockey Make a Late-Season Push

Nov. 15, 2012

By Thomas Walter, Bucknell Athletic Communications Student Assistant

Imagine getting contacted by someone asking you to try out to represent your country on a national sports team. Imagine a few weeks later doing your homework and getting another phone call saying that you made that team that will be traveling to Mexico for three weeks to compete for your country on the Under- 21 National Field Hockey Team. Well, that is exactly what happened to Bucknell field hockey junior Vickie Resh when she traveled to Guadalajara, Mexico, in September to play in the Junior Pan-American Games.

After playing in and winning the USA Field Hockey Women's National Championship with the New Jersey State team, Resh received an email asking her to come to Maryland to try out for the Under-21 National Team.

"I played for the New Jersey team in U.S. national championship during the summer. Then, after that tournament, I was selected to try out for the Under-21 National team, which was a big shock for me," says Resh. "It was a blessing. I ended up making the team and was called in the beginning of the preseason to come to Maryland to train for a week not thinking anything would come of it. But once I was back at Bucknell I got an email telling me to pack my things. I was going to Mexico!"

Resh left her Bucknell team for a higher calling right as the season was picking up pace. She was torn between her college team and her country, but with encouragement from Bison head coach Jeremy Cook, Resh headed to Guadalajara.

When she began her play with the National Team in Guadalajara, Resh noticed a big difference between collegiate field hockey and international field hockey.

"The speed of the game was the biggest difference. It was so much faster. The higher tempo is such an advantage and I just wanted to bring that back to Bucknell with me," says Resh. "The experience turned me into a stronger and more confident player."

?

?

It was not all fun and games in Mexico. There was hard work and sacrifice in order to achieve the success Team USA did, with only about two hours of free time throughout the day, mostly used for completing homework.

As thankful as she was for the opportunity, Resh still found some difficulties while living in Mexico for three weeks. Resh and her teammates were forced to use water bottles for any water they drank, they needed to manage the demands of school hundreds of miles away and the culture was incredibly foreign and different to Resh.

Yet Mexico was not filled only with struggles. Resh enjoyed reverting back to her natural position of defense having played in the midfield for her first three years with the Bison. Additionally, Resh had the pleasure of blogging for www.BucknellBison.com, and she received plenty of playing time on a squad that finished third and qualified for the World Cup. Team USA went 5-2, beating Venezuela, Trindad &Tobago, Paraguay, Jamaica and Chile. They lost to Chile in pool play, but beat them in the Bronze Medal match. The other loss came at the hands of the eventual champion, Argentina.

As excited as Resh was for the World Cup process to begin, after the three weeks in Mexico she was ecstatic about returning to her Bison teammates. Upon her arrival back to Bucknell she could see that she had missed a lot of team bonding, but she was excited to bring her experience with Team USA from Mexico to help the Bison make a strong push in the second-half of their season and into the playoffs.

The Bison had eight games remaining when Resh rejoined the lineup. They jumped off to a hot start winning four of their next six outings. But, they dropped the next two games, first to No. 5 Penn State and then to Patriot League rival American. Their confidence was hurt, but because of the team's talent and depth Resh still believed in her goal to win the Patriot League Championship. However, American proved to be too strong a team, ousting Bucknell from the Patriot League Tournament, and beating the Bison for the second time in as many games. Resh was named to the All-Patriot League Second Team for the second year in a row due to her outstanding play in her shortened season. Resh started in all 13 games that she played in and scored the second goal of her career in 2012.

Resh's collegiate season may be over, but that does not mean she won't be busy. She will look to continue her academic success and receive Patriot League Academic Honor Roll honors as well as Bucknell's Dean List for the second year in a row. Resh explained that time management is the key to her academic success.

"At Bucknell it is all about taking every extra moment you have to do work," explains Resh, an animal behavior major. "It's really time management to the extreme. Down in Mexico it was even tougher, but it really helped me mature not only as an athlete but also as a student."

For now Resh waits patiently to see what the next step in the World Cup process will be. Training begins this winter and, even though she will be focusing on her academics, she will also be staying in strong field hockey shape because who knows when Team USA will come knocking next.

Abandon no-new-tax pledge? Some in GOP consider the unthinkable.

Exit polls showed that the GOP is seen as favoring the wealthy over the middle class. That may be leading some to reconsider the party's devotion to the no-new-tax pledge ? at least for the rich.

By Liz Marlantes,?Correspondent / November 16, 2012

Haley Barbour, former Republican governor of Mississippi and chairman of the Republican National Committee, speaks at a General Electric conference on 'American Competitiveness: What Works' in Washington earlier this year. He has said the GOP should consider tax increases on the wealthy as part of a broader fiscal reform package.

As the Republican Party continues its post-election ?proctology exam? (as the always colorful former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour ? a Republican ? put it), analyzing what went wrong and how to restore the party brand, we?re starting to hear hints at a prescription that just two years ago would have been unheard of: Maybe it?s time to throw Grover Norquist under the bus.

Mr. Norquist, of course, is the president of Americans for Tax Reform, and the author of the famous ?no new taxes? pledge taken by most GOP members of Congress. In years past, if politicians violated ? or even threatened to violate ? the pledge, Norquist at times responded by running attack ads against them and even supporting primary challengers.

But as the parties begin negotiations over the "fiscal cliff" ? the automatic spending cuts and tax increases scheduled to hit at the end of the year ? there are signs that Norquist may be losing some sway. For one thing, as The Hill's Russell Berman recently noted, in the next session the number of members who have taken the pledge will go down to fewer than half overall. This is in part because of GOP losses, but also because roughly a dozen newly elected Republicans did not sign it, and a handful of returning Republicans have now explicitly rejected it.?

And notably, Republicans are not only making conciliatory comments about new tax "revenue" in general ? but some are also explicitly saying they'd accept higher tax rates on the wealthy.

Of course, no one is suggesting that the party should abandon its overall commitment to low taxes. But there is clearly a growing realization among many Republicans that the party?s current image as favoring the wealthy at the expense of the middle class has become politically toxic ? as has the perception that the party puts ideological purity before practicality. As Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) wrote in an opinion piece for CNN: "We must not be the party that simply protects the well off so they can keep their toys."?

Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol kicked off the "let's consider higher tax rates for the rich" conversation last weekend, when he said on Fox News Sunday: ?It won?t kill the country if we raise taxes a little bit on millionaires. It really won?t.? He then asked rhetorically: ?Really? The Republican Party is going to fall on its sword to defend a bunch of millionaires, half of whom voted Democratic, and half of whom live in Hollywood and are hostile to Republicans??

Teachers union says its doing nothing illegal

Accused of bullying and intimidation by their boss, London-area elementary teachers are firing back.

In a letter to the Thames Valley District school board?s 3,200 elementary teachers, education director Bill Tucker says he?s ?troubled? by reports of workplace intimidation and bullying, results of the teachers? fight with the province over contracts.

Tucker also admonishes teachers for ?workplace refusals? that he calls illegal strike activity.

?In an organization that prides itself on safe school and workplace initiatives, bullying behaviour is unacceptable,? Tucker wrote.

His Nov. 8 letter warns teachers if they don?t perform their teaching responsibilities, they can be ?subject to the appropriate consequences: loss of pay and/or potential disciplinary review.?

But the teachers? union is firing back, telling Tucker its members are doing nothing illegal.

?We fundamentally reject your claim that members are acting contrary to the law,? Phillip Mack, who heads the local chapter of the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO), wrote.

The teachers are embroiled in a stand-off with the province, with contract talks stalled.

The 76,000-member ETFO is fighting the Liberal government?s Bill 115, which imposed wage-freezing contracts on them and limits strike action.

That?s put the school board, which negotiates the local part of union contracts with ETFO locals, in a tough spot, in part forced to work under and defend government legislation it had no hand in creating.

?Bill 115 has not been helpful. It?s added stress on the board and on the principals. There?s a lot of stress right now,? Mack told The Free Press.

It?s unclear what bullying or intimidating behaviour Tucker was referencing. He was unavailable for comment Wednesday.

Mack said many teachers were offended by the letter, seeing it as an unwarranted reprimand and threat.

?ETFO will support and defend our members to the fullest extent if the board carries out any of the improper threats or pursues any of the avenues suggested in your letter,? Mack?s letter to Tucker says.

In his letter, Tucker compares teachers to students who should stay within the confines of the law.

?When students display inappropriate conduct in class or refuse to comply with teacher directions, we implement consequences that reflect the seriousness of that behaviour,? the Nov. 8 letter says.

?In other words, we do not condone the inappropriate behaviour in our students. The corollary to that is that I cannot condone the inappropriate behaviour or conduct associated with illegal strike activities.?

Elementary teachers across Ontario have stopped doing some after-school activities, like coaching, as the fight with the province continues.

The union argues it?s not strike activity ? just a ?pause? in activites teachers aren?t paid to do.

Teachers are also refusing to attend staff meetings Mondays and Tuesdays.

Suggesting teachers are taking part in illegal activities has heightened stress, Mack said.

?I don?t think there?s been any intimidation . . . We?re within our legal rights,? he said.

Joyce Bennett, the trustee who chairs the Thames board, said Tucker?s letter was necessary.

?We are, as a board, facing challenging times and this was a message that had to be given because (teachers) aren?t in a legal strike position. A message had to be sent,? she said.

3A football: Dixie makes incredible run to title game

(Kim Raff | The Salt Lake Tribune) Dixie player Chance Aplanalp makes a snow angle on the field after Dixie defeated Juan Diego 14-13 during the 3A State Semifinal at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah on November 9, 2012.

Prep football ? Dixie and Spanish Fork will play for the state title at 11 a.m. Friday.

Dixie defensive end Jesse Lambert heard all the naysayers. The Flyers did it once, they said, but they won?t do it again, not against Juan Diego.

Even after the Flyers upset undefeated Stansbury in the quarterfinals, believers were scarce. Their semifinal opponent, Juan Diego, was considered by many to be the best Class 3A team in the state, and knocking off a pair of unbeatens in consecutive weeks seemed like a monumental task.

In the snow at Rice-Eccles Stadium last Friday, the Flyers silenced their critics, handing the Soaring Eagle their first loss, a 14-13 shocker.

"Everybody was down on us. Everybody was telling us that we weren?t going to be able to do it," Lambert said. "We came into that game knowing if we played our game, good things would happen, and we?d be able to come out on top."

The recipe for the upset was clear from the beginning, and it was the same one the Flyers used against Stansbury. From the opening play of the game, the Flyers had to be the ones on the offensive.

"We had to get it into our heads that we had to attack them," Lambert said. "We couldn?t wait for them. ... We know that if we don?t get on them early, then they?re just going to run right over us."

The snow complicated things, playing right into the hands of the vaunted Soaring Eagle running attack, which no defense had been able to slow this season.

"Going into the game, we knew we could compete with them," Dixie quarterback Blake Barney said. "But then, because of the snow, it was kind of crazy. It was super hard to pass, and they?re a running team. When that happened, I knew we could still win, but our defense really stepped up."

The Flyers now have a date with Spanish Fork on Friday for the state title. Lambert understands there is one more game to be won for the Flyers to cap their unlikely run. But he acknowledges that what they?ve done so far is special, regardless of what happens against the Dons.

"It?s amazing. I?ve been dreaming of this since I can remember," Lambert said. "Now that I?m here, I?m overwhelmed. It?s great to know that all my life I?ve been working for one thing, and it?s this, and I?m here."

story continues below

In the eyes of many, the Flyers again will play the role of the underdog to the Dons, who have lost just once this season. If there is one advantage the Flyers have, it?s that they?ve been here before. And they?ve proven they can thrive against the best.

"I?m glad we had the tough road," Lambert said. "I?m glad we played those undefeated teams. I?m glad we had to go through them because you have to go through them at one point. It?s great going into this championship game knowing we?ve beat supposedly the best teams in the state."

Wal-Mart Settles $4 Million Lawsuit | 5NEWSOnline.com ? Ft. Smith ...

walmart

It?s been three years of vigorous defense but Wal-Mart Stores Inc. agreed to settle a federal class-action lawsuit involving more than 13,500 employees who alleged the retailer?s interference in how worker compensation claims were paid for on-the-job accidents.

U.S. District Judge Robert Blackburn in Denver approved the $4 million settlement from Wal-Mart and $4 million from co-defendant Claims Management Inc. on Tuesday (Nov. 13). The court also ordered four years of injunctive relief where Wal-Mart and CMI agreed to provide training for its workers compensation adjustors.

The case ? Josephine Gianzero v. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. ? ?also involved American Home Assurance Co. and Concentra Health Services in Colorado as co-defendants.

Concentra?s insurer, Lexington Insurance, agreed to pay another $4 million to settle the case.

The defendants each denied all allegations of wrongdoing.

Wal-Mart operates numerous retail stores in Colorado and American Home Assurance provides the company?s workers compensation insurance. Concentra operates medical facilities where Wal-Mart employees received treatment.

The approved settlement allows for $520 payments to more than 13,500 plaintiffs who were treated at a Concentra facility and $50 to those treated at other facilities.

Latest HTC DLX pics point to wider international launch

Android Central Android Central Android Central

HTC has already announced one variant of its 5-inch, 1080p "DLX" handset, the Japanese HTC J Butterfly, and tomorrow in New York City we'll be seeing the Verizon version, the Droid DNA. Today, leaked information from a Taiwanese forum might indicate a wider Asian launch for the device.

The images above have emerged on ePrice, showing the HTC DLX in black, white and brown flavors. According to the source, the brown and black version will be available in China, while HTC's native Taiwan will get all three. The international DLX seems to be slightly thinner than the Verizon version -- note the protruding camera lens in the middle shot. This could point to a battery smaller than the 2500mAh unit reported to power the Droid DNA.

Various dates are being bandied about for the Chinese and Taiwanese launch of the DLX (which, by the way, we imagine is still a codename). The poster on ePrice says it might arrive in Taiwan as early as Dec. 20.

In addition to the crazy 1080p display, reported DLX/Droid DNA specs include a quad-core Snapdragon S4 CPU, 2GB of RAM and a 12MP camera, putting it on par with the J Butterfly.

Our fingers are firmly crossed for an unlocked European version of this beauty.

Petraeus affair: From romantic jealousy to the downfall of 'King David'

Details are emerging about the extramarital affair that led to CIA Director David Petraeus's resignation. Some in Congress want to know why the FBI waited so long to inform them.

By Brad Knickerbocker,?Staff writer / November 11, 2012

Former CIA Director David Petraeus testifies on Capitol Hill in February. Petraeus has resigned because of an extramarital affair.

The sudden resignation of CIA Director David Petraeus apparently started out in prosaic fashion, based on romantic jealousy that sounds like junior high school.

According to news reports that grew in detail over the weekend, the retired four-star Army general?s paramour ? identified widely as Petraeus biographer and confidant Paula Broadwell ? had become jealous of another woman close to Mr. Petraeus. She sent harassing e-mails to the other woman, who filed a complaint eventually taken up by the FBI.

When agents investigated Ms. Broadwell?s e-mail account, they discovered romantic exchanges she had had with the CIA director. Concerned about possible security breaches, agents looked at Petraeus?s personal email account. In a short time he was admitting to an extramarital affair and handing his resignation to President Obama.

RECOMMENDED:?5 ways events overseas could shape Obama's second term

At this point, there is no evidence that intelligence or national security secrets were compromised during the hidden affair, officials have said. It was via his personal Gmail account ? not his secure CIA email ? that Petraeus and Broadwell communicated. As a West Point graduate and Army Reserve officer, Broadwell had her own security clearance, although she would not have had the ?need to know? required for the highest levels of secrecy.

As the scandal broke, official Washington remained generally laudatory of Petraeus.

With a reputation as one of the best thinkers in the US military (he has a PhD in international relations from Princeton University) as well as battlefield commanders, he designed and led the military surge in Iraq, then was tapped by President Obama to take over as top US commander in Afghanistan when Gen. Stanley McChrystal was relieved of duty in 2010 for controversial comments in Rolling Stone magazine.

A year later, Petraeus was confirmed as CIA director when Leon Panetta moved on to become Secretary of Defense.

Under the?Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), adultery is a punishable offense for soldiers if the conduct is shown to be detrimental ?to good order and discipline in the armed forces or was of a nature to bring discredit upon the armed forces.?

The energy of stunt kites

ScienceDaily (Nov. 12, 2012) ? It may seem as though the German plains are all but tapped out when it comes to wind energy production. To refute this theory researchers are sending stunt kites into the skies to harness the wind and convert the kinetic energy generated into electricity.

Kite surfing has risen to become a fashionable sporting activity, with the number of enthusiasts participating in this cross between wind surfing and stunt kite flying growing at a tremendous pace. When the wind catches the kite, the surfer is carried meters into the air; and the greater the leap, the bigger the thrill. But a modern stunt kite is capable of being much more than a mere piece of sporting equipment -- it has the potential to become a valuable energy producer. A stunt kite's aerial movements can be used to drive a generator, which in turn converts this kinetic energy into electricity. This dynamic idea came to the founders of Berlin-based wind energy developer NTS GmbH. To make their concept a reality, they brought in the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA in Stuttgart. The project partners intend to use their new method to harness the power of strong winds at altitudes of up to 500 meters.

Joachim Montnacher, an engineer at the IPA, explains how a "kite power station" works thus: "The kites fly at a height of 300 to 500 meters, perfectly positioned to be caught by strong winds. Cables, about 700 meters in length, tether the kites to vehicles and pull them around a circuit on rails. A generator then converts the kinetic energy of the vehicles into electricity. The control and measuring technology is positioned on the vehicles." Compared to conventional wind farm technology that relies on rotors, this technology offers a wide range of advantages. Wind speeds at ground level tend to zero, but they increase dramatically the higher you go. At a height of 100 meters wind speeds are around 15 meters a second; at 500 meters they exceed 20 meters a second. "The energy yield of a kite far exceeds that of a wind turbine, whose rotor tips turn at a maximum height of 200 meters. Doubling the wind speed results in eight times the energy," says Montnacher. "Depending on wind conditions, eight kites with a combined surface area of up to 300 square meters can equate to 20 conventional 1-megawatt wind turbines."

More consistent winds at 500 meters

Kites do not have to struggle with the constancy of the wind the way turbines do, because the higher you go, the windier things get. Figures for the past year show that at a height of 10 meters, there is only about a 35 percent chance of wind speeds reaching 5 meters a second, but at 500 meters that likelihood goes up to 70 percent. This makes any number of new lowland sites viable for the production of wind energy. Another advantage is that it costs considerably less to build a system that, among other things, does not require towers each weighing hundreds of tons.

The project partners have clearly divided up responsibilities: NTS GmbH will design the kites and construct the high-altitude wind farm, and the researchers from the IPA will be in charge of developing the control and measuring technology, which includes the cable winching mechanism and cable store. One of the jobs of the control unit is to transmit the measuring signals to the cable control and kite regulation mechanisms. A horizontal and vertical angle sensor located in each cable line and a force sensor within the cable distributor guarantee precise control of the kite's movements as it follows either a figure-of-eight or sine-wave flight path up above. These flight maneuvers generate a high pulling power of up to 10 kilonewtons (kN) -- meaning that a 20-square-meter kite has the capacity to pull one ton. Each vehicle is pulled by a different flight system.

At a test site in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania, IPA researchers and NTS GmbH have already been able to send a kite on its maiden voyage along a 400-meter-long straight track. A remote control similar to those used to fly model planes was used to manually control the kite. The experts now want to reconfigure the test track making it into a loop. Computers will eventually be used to achieve fully automatic control of the kites.

"According to our simulations, we could use an NTS track running a total of 24 kites to generate 120 gigawatt hours a year (GWh/year). To put this into perspective, a 2-megawatt wind turbine produces around 4 GWh/year. So an NTS system could replace 30 2-megawatt turbines and supply power to around 30,000 homes," says Guido L?tsch, managing director of NTS GmbH. After successful test flights on the demonstration track, the project partners are confident that their computer simulations will hold up in reality. The first investors are already on board.

Question: My 8-year-old son was born prematurely and weighed only 3 pounds. He is still too thin in my opinion, although his doctor hasn?t been worried about it. I have been trying to get him to gain weight his whole life. In pre-school, kindergarten, and first grade I did not pack a special lunch for him (lunch was provided by the school.) It seemed to me that he rarely ate lunch for these three years. My mother convinced me to start packing his lunch this year. He seems to be eating a bit more, but is overall just as picky. What should I do?

Answer: Because parent concerns about children who don?t eat much and are underweight are fairly common these days, I?ve asked the expert opinions of two pediatricians. Both tell me the same thing: First, if the child in question is healthy and active, then he or she is eating enough; second, being overweight is more of a problem than being slightly underweight (the childhood obesity problem in is perhaps America?s major childhood health issue); third, if the child?s physician has been consulted and is not concerned, then there is almost certainly no problem. It is the extremely rare child in America who suffers from malnutrition, the symptoms of which _ lethargy, distended belly, dizziness, significant weight loss _ are obvious indicators that something drastic is wrong.

In all likelihood, his prematurity sensitized you to health issues and your anxiety causes you to see mountains where there are only molehills. I can only advise you to relax and trust your son?s physician where his physical well-being is concerned.

(AP) ? New Yorkers railed Sunday against a utility that has lagged behind others in restoring power two weeks after the superstorm that socked the region, criticizing its slow pace as well as a dearth of information.

About 120,000 customers in New York and New Jersey remained without power Sunday, including tens of thousands of homes and businesses that were too damaged to connect to power even if it was running in their neighborhood. More than 8 million lost power during the storm, and some during a later nor'easter.

Separately, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano visited with disaster-relief workers Sunday in Staten Island's Midland Beach neighborhood, which is still devastated two weeks after Sandy hit.

The lack of power restoration for a relative few in the densely populated region at the heart of the storm reinforced Sandy's fractured effect on the area: tragic and vicious to some, merely a nuisance to others.

Perhaps none of the utilities have drawn criticism as widespread, or as harsh, as the Long Island Power Authority. Nearly 50,000 of the homes and businesses it serves were still without power Sunday evening, and 55,000 more couldn't safely connect even though their local grids were back online because their wiring and other equipment had been flooded. It would need to be repaired or inspected before those homes could regain power, LIPA said.

"We certainly understand the frustration that's out there," LIPA's chief operating officer, Michael Hervey, said in a conference call late Sunday. But, he said, the storm had been worse than expected, no utility had as many workers in place beforehand as it would have liked, and the power was coming back rapidly "compared to the damage that's been incurred."

Customers told of calling LIPA multiple times a day for updates and getting no answer, or contradictory advice.

"I was so disgusted the other night," said Carrie Baram of Baldwin Harbor, who said she calls the utility three times a day. "I was up till midnight, but nobody bothered to answer the telephone."

Baram, 56, said she and her husband, Bob, go to the mall to charge their cellphones, and Bob, a sales manager, goes there to work. They trekked to her parents' house to shower. At night, they huddle under a pile of blankets and listen to the sound of fire engines, which Baram assumes are blaring because people have been accidentally setting blazes with their generators.

"It's dark," said an exasperated Baram, "it's frightening, and it's freezing."

LIPA has said it knows that customers aren't getting the information they need, partly because of an outdated information technology system that it is updating. Sunday, executives said they were working on setting up information centers near the most heavily damaged areas. The company also said it had deployed 6,400 linemen to work on restoring power, compared to 200 on a normal day.

"'They're working on it, they're working on it' ? that would be their common response," Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano said Sunday, describing LIPA's interaction with his office.

He said LIPA had failed to answer even simple questions from its customers and that Sandy's magnitude wasn't an excuse.

"How could a utility of that size, with the financial support that it receives, fail to communicate with its residents?" he said. "Its basic logistics seem to have failed."

Mangano and other lawmakers have called for the federal government to step in and assist with restoring power to Long Island, saying LIPA could not be trusted to get the job done.

On Sunday, LIPA said it had restored power to 95 percent of homes and businesses where it was safe to receive power and that that figure would be 99 percent by the end of Tuesday. It didn't give an estimate for the remaining customers.

"When we're done, we will look at any improvements we need to make in the process," Hervey said. "My appeal to those customers is once the crews arrive, stand back and let them get their work done."

Phillip Jones, 43, a parole officer in Uniondale, said he had called LIPA about 10 times a day before his power was turned on Saturday and usually just got a busy signal. A few times he got a recording saying the company was aware of the problems and would call if it needed to speak to him.

"Which was kind of strange," Jones said, "because most of the phones were not working that well."

Jones also criticized LIPA's failure to find a way to tell people how long to expect to be without electricity.

"If they had said the lights won't be on until two weeks from now, I could have made a two-week plan," he said. Instead, he and his wife and two children had been sleeping in one bed to try to stay warm, and he missed two weeks of work. "All you could do was hope that today would be the day."

On Staten Island, Napolitano said "a lot of progress" had been made since the storm hit and especially since her last visit 10 days earlier.

"It seems like a different place," she said. "You can really tell the difference."

But, she added, there was a lot more to do. "The last big chunk" to solve, she said, is the question of how quickly power can be returned to thousands of homes without it.

If homes are not inhabitable even after power returns, she said, the government is finding temporary apartments and hotels where evacuees can stay ? preferably in the same community so kids can continue going to the same schools.

In New York City, the mayor's office said about 6,000 residents of low-income housing were still without power in 30 buildings. Ahead of a Veterans Day wreath-laying ceremony, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the city was "getting more generators in" and added, "It's a question of how quickly the electricians can set things up."

He said heating is "a more complex problem, but that's coming along as well."

Police raised the city's death toll from the storm to 43, after the death of a 77-year-old retired custodian who apparently fell down the stairs of his apartment building in the Rockaways, when it was dark and without power. Family members found him on Oct. 31; he died at a hospital Saturday.

Though New York and New Jersey bore the brunt of the destruction, at its peak, the storm reached 1,000 miles across, killed more than 100 people in 10 states, knocked out power to 8.5 million and canceled nearly 20,000 flights. More than 12 inches of rain fell in Easton, Md., and 34 inches of snow fell in Gatlinburg, Tenn. Damage has been estimated at $50 billion, making Sandy the second most expensive storm in U.S. history, behind Katrina.

BBC apologizes for broadcasting abuse allegations

LONDON (AP) ? For the last month, the BBC has been heavily criticized for not airing allegations of child sex abuse committed by one of its star hosts, the late Jimmy Savile. Now it is in crisis because it did broadcast claims against a former senior politician that turned out to be wrong.

In a humiliating retreat for one of the world's leading broadcasters, the BBC apologized Friday for airing a report featuring accusations from a child abuse victim which the victim later retracted.

The BBC also said it was suspending investigations at "Newsnight" ? its premiere investigative program. That's the same show under investigation for not airing a report on Savile.

Friday's apology stems from a BBC report aired last week that indicated there were child abuse allegations against an unnamed senior politician from the Margaret Thatcher era. The network did not name the politician, but Internet chatter identified him as Alistair McAlpine, a Conservative Party member of the House of Lords.

Angry about the rumors, McAlpine came forward Friday to denounce the claims as completely false. His accuser, abuse victim Steve Messham, then apologized and said he had identified the wrong man.

That led the BBC to say it apologized "unreservedly" for broadcasting the report. The apology came after McAlpine's lawyer threatened legal action.

The BBC's apology came after a week of claims and counterclaims in the spreading abuse scandal. Since accusations surfaced last month that renowned BBC host Savile sexually abused young victims for decades without being exposed, scores of adults have come forward to claim that their own allegations of sex assault in the past were ignored.

With the country reeling over how to respond to a torrent of new abuse claims, Prime Minister David Cameron on Friday warned the media and the public of the danger of shredding the reputations of innocent figures.

"Effectively, you are casting lots of aspersions about lots of people without any evidence," Cameron said. "You have to be careful you don't start some sort of witch hunt against some people who might be entirely innocent."

Cameron's words, coming a day after he was handed a list on live television of high-profile figures named in Internet rumors as possible sex offenders, took on greater significance Friday after it emerged that McAlpine was wrongly accused in a case of mistaken identity.

Last week, "Newsnight" aired a report on allegations related to sex abuse in Wales in the 1970s and 1980s. The program interviewed abuse victim Messham, who claimed that previous reports into the Wales scandal had failed to examine abuse by someone he described as a senior Conservative Party figure at the time, but did not name.

On Friday, McAlpine said he was likely the political figure referred to in the "Newsnight" report. McAlpine, who was Conservative Party treasurer in the era of Thatcher, insisted he had never been involved in the abuse of children and suggested that he had been the victim of mistaken identity.

That turned out to be true.

Messham, the abuse victim, later Friday told the BBC he had offered "sincere and humble apologies" to McAlpine for wrongly identifying his abuser.

"After seeing a picture in the past hour of the individual concerned, this (is) not the person I identified by photograph presented to me by the police in the early 1990s, who told me the man in the photograph was Lord McAlpine," Messham told the BBC.

The BBC's decision to broadcast Messham's initial claim came as it conducted an internal inquiry into why "Newsnight" had shelved an investigation into Savile late last year, weeks before the organization screened tribute shows about his life and work. Savile, who presented music and children's shows on BBC, died in October 2011.

When its rival ITV aired allegations about Savile last month, the expose led to a widespread discussion of other, unrelated sexual abuse in Britain in the recent past ? including cases in Wales in which Messham was a victim.

Amid frenzied speculation, Cameron was on Thursday handed a list of individuals who have been the subject of Internet speculation during an interview by ITV's "This Morning" program. In his haste, the show's presenter Phillip Schofield fleetingly showed the note to a camera, revealing some of the identities.

McAlpine said that rumors spreading online and the actions of the BBC and ITV had left him with little option other than to comment. "In order to mitigate, if only to some small extent, the damage to my reputation I must publicly tackle these slurs and set the record straight," he said in a statement.

The politician said that he had never abused Messham or any other child, and had never visited children's homes or a hotel in the Welsh town of Wrexham where the victim told the BBC that sex abuse had taken place.

Meanwhile, Britain's television standards regulator Ofcom confirmed that it had received complaints about ITV's "This Morning" over its handling of the child abuse issue.

"The action of presenting a random list from the Internet of alleged 'suspects' to the prime minister, live on television, was a grave error of judgment," said Conservative lawmaker Stuart Andrew, who is among those to have filed a complaint.

Schofield, the ITV presenter, stressed it was never his intention to identify anyone on the list and apologized if viewers were able see names. "I was not accusing anyone of anything and it is essential that it is understood that I would never be part of any kind of witch hunt," he said in a statement.

ITV said in a statement it was "extremely regrettable" that a "misjudged camera angle" may have made names briefly visible. The broadcaster echoed Schofield in insisting that the program was not making any accusations against anyone in particular.

Disappear from the Internet forever

9 hrs.

Sick of horribly embarrassing things showing up when potential employers Google your name? Tired of everyone knowing you live in a garden level dungeon apartment? Perhaps you just don't like the fact the Internet makes you?easy to find. Thankfully, it's not that hard to delete yourself entirely. Here's how to do it.

For mildly famous (or infamous) individuals, disappearing is essentially impossible, but for the average person it's surprisingly easy. It just depends on much info is already out there.

Step 1: Delete your social network accounts

Chances are the first results that pop up on a Google search of your name are your social network profiles. This likely includes things like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, and anywhere else you're using your real name. So, the first step to disappearing from the Internet is to remove these profiles.

If you just want to remove search results, you can set your?profiles to private, skip this step, and move on to step two. This isn't a perfect solution, but if you want to keep your social networks it will at least pull the results off the search engines. Here's how to delete your accounts on the big social networks:

Facebook: To delete your Facebook profile, head?to this link?while you're logged in, click the "Delete My Account" button, and you're done. The process might take up to 14 days before your profile is completely gone. Doing it this way deletes all of your data, and it cannot be reactivated.?

Some messages might still show up, but anything you've been tagged in will have your name removed (although the pictures themselves will remain). If you want those pictures removed completely, report that you didn't give permission for that photo under the?intellectual property tag on Facebook, or contact your friend directly and ask them to remove it.

Twitter: To delete your Twitter account, head?to your account settings page, and click "Deactivate my account" at the bottom. Your account gets deleted completely, but it will take a few weeks before results stop showing up in searches.

LinkedIn: To delete your LinkedIn account, head to your?settings page, click the "Account" icon, then the "close your account" link.

Google+: Google+ is a bit tricky because it's tied to your entire Google account. If you want to go ahead and close?everything?including email, calendars, and whatever else, sign into your primary?Google Account homepage, and chose "Close account and delete all services and info associated with it." This will get rid of everything from Gmail to Google Checkout. If you only need to ditch the Google+ account, follow?this link?and select "Delete Google+ content." This will remove your profile from Google+, but retain any other Google services you have.

You'll want to follow the above steps for any other social networks you use, forum accounts you have, or other sites you registered under your real name (this might include?Yelp,?Amazon,Quora, etc).?

If you have trouble remembering all your accounts,?Account Killer?has a huge list that includes direct links to deleting your profile from over 500 different sites. Your Google search for your name in the first step should also provide a guide to places you used your real name to create an account.

Step 2: Remove unwanted search results

Once you get rid of your social profiles, content is likely still floating around the web that you need to get rid of. They might be images, articles, or even employer websites. The first thing to do is figure out where you're showing up online in search results. Search?Google?and make a note (or bookmark) where you name shows up on web sites.

You essentially have one course of action to remove this content: contact the source directly. Email the web site hosting the content and politely ask them to remove it (or at least remove your name).?

A quick email works well for places like former employers who still haven't removed you from the employees list, family members who post pictures of you on their personal blogs, or even on donation pages for causes you've supported. In due time it will drop from search results.

After that, you can appeal to the search engines directly to remove the edited pages right away. You can do so through?Google,?Google Images, or?Bing?by filling out a simple form and requesting the URL to be indexed again. This doesn't always work, but it's worth a shot. You'll have a better chance if someone is publishing libelous content about you, breaking a copyright of any kind, or if a page is displaying confidential information about you.

If you cannot get everything off of your Google search results, you might also consider?burying personal data as far as possible. To do this while maintaining your vow to delete yourself from the Internet forever, create profiles on popular social sites like Twitter, Google+, or Facebook as well as landing pages like?About.Me?with just your name and no other details.?

You can also set up?your own website?filled with lots of?keywords about your name but no actual information?(or just create?a 410 error page and leave it at that). It's not as good as deleting content completely, but at least Internet sleuths will only be lead to a blank page with no information on you.

Step 3: Get rid of background check, criminal, and public record results

By now we've destroyed the bulk of your search results and social networks. But people can still run background checks and people searches on you very easily. It's time to destroy that personal data as best we can, and dig into various people databases. Here are a few worth checking:

Zabasearch: Zabasearch is mostly about finding addresses and phone numbers. Make a quick search of yourself and see what it knows.

Intelius: Intelius can perform background checks, hunt down criminal records, email addresses, social networks, and more. You have to pay to get your results, but you'll get a general idea of what's out there by simply searching your name.

Spokeo: Spokeo is essentially an address book and it can track you down?surprisingly?well to reveal your gender, age, phone number, address, relatives, marital status, and a whole lot more. Again, it costs a bit of money to get your full results, but you can get a general idea of what you need to snuff out.

Pipl: Pipl aggregates all of the above searches, but it's worth looking at to make sure no others have slipped through the cracks.

If you're anything like me (or my neighbor who I also tested this on), then you're probably a little surprised by the amount of information these databases have. Now it's time to get rid of as many of those as possible.

You have a couple different options for this. You can pay a service like?DeleteMe?$99 to go through and delete all these results. Or you can?follow DeleteMe's own guide to do it yourself.

The DIY method requires you contact around 25 different sites individually to remove the listings that include your address, phone number, income, marital status, current job, and everything else. Some sites are as simple as opting out through a link (Reddit has a greatcollection of the easy ones), while others require that you send in proof of identification and a letter.

Going through this step will help get rid of everything that comes in search results, but it will not remove your data completely. As long as information like your address and phone number are registered?somewhere, people will be able to find you. Going through the process of opting out of background checks, public records, and people search engines just makes that personal data harder to find.

Step 4: Remove any usernames attached to an email address with your name

Any good Internet sleuth will be able to link together your usernames on forums, web sites, and elsewhere with your email address. Subsequently, they'll eventually trace that back to your name.

The process to remove this data is dependent on the forums and sites you use. If you can, unlink your primary email address with your username whenever possible. If you're dealing with forums, ask the moderators to delete any posts that identify you personally. Essentially, cut any ties between your email address or name with your username. If you use the same username for every site, consider coming up with new names for every site.

Step 5: Stay off search engines without going offline by remaining anonymous

From here on out you'll have to remain vigilant in not releasing your information publicly. That means no social networks with your real name, and a yearly audit of the background check websites to ensure they don't have any new information on you.

Chances are you still want to use the Internet, right? In that case, you'll need to set up a few things to ensure your data stays locked down. That means creating a fake identity.

To do so, you can create an email address on a service like?Gmail?or?Outlook?with a pseudonym.Fake Name Generator?is a great way to come up with a new identity complete with birthdate, and everything else.

You can also use a?temporary email address for all your communications, and then use your new pseudonym and fake email address to sign up for any services you need. To keep your cell phone records private, you might also consider using?Google Voice?instead of going through a carrier since you can make up your Google Account name.

As for the rest of your browsing,?we've shown?you plenty?of ways?to keep your browsing anonymous before. This won't have an effect on any online searches for your name, but it will at least keep advertisers off your back.

When it boils down to it, the?Internet is forever?and truly resourceful people will always be able to find you. But if you take the steps outlined above, you'll at least thwart amateur Internet sleuths and regain a touch of privacy.

90% Holy Motors

"Holy Motors," from French filmmaker Leos Carax, is the best avant-garde film of 2012 so far. But that's not saying much, as it's been a terrible year for avant-garde film. Despite its title, "Holy Motors" really isn't about cars. It's somewhat about technology, with limousines probably meant to represent traditional celluloid cameras -- so big and bulky that they are a challenge to handle. But oh so wonderful. Big wonderful machines. Stretch limos can barely turn a corner in the old sectors of great cities like Paris and New York. But doesn't everyone's heart skip a beat just a bit when they enter one? First and foremost, "Holy Motors" is about people, as was the case with Carax's first film, "Boy Meets Girl" (1984). This is an avant-garde artist with a deep-feeling heart and a deep sensitivity to the people around him. Holy Love. Amen to that. The film documents a day in the life of a man named Oscar. (Perhaps this is a tribute to American cinema and its big, grand Academy Awards. Holy Glamour.) Played spectacularly well by the protean Denis Lavant, Oscar is carted around all day in a white stretch limo, taken to a series of appointments throughout Paris. At each appointment, he becomes a different character. His limo is a dressing room, where he applies make-up and elaborate disguises to become his next character. The first one is an old, crippled woman begging for money on the street. Another is a revolting barefoot troll (half-man, half-beast) who interrupts a high-fashion photo shoot and kidnaps the model (who is played by Eva Mendes). Every sequence is quite thrilling, and each one is so different from the others. Most breathtaking of all is the sequence where his movements are recorded in a stop-motion studio, for use in what appears to be a pornographic video game. Gradually it becomes clear that these appointments are elaborately planned, and everyone he interacts with during each scene is also an actor. While donning his next costume in the limo, he is also reading a file that someone else has prepared, a summary of what his next character will be doing. We even meet a man who appears to be something like Oscar's employer, who critiques Oscar's performances. Oscar announces that he has been having more difficulty staying in character because the cameras have gotten so small that they cannot be seen. This is when "Holy Motors" started to seem like a comment on digital filmmaking. At my screening at the New York Film Festival, Carax was in attendance, as was Kylie Minogue, who has a small role in the film. (I initially thought this was Minogue's first time acting. But not so. She has appeared in a number of television shows and films, including "Moulin Rouge," where she played the Green Fairy. Who knew?) Carax spoke for about a half-hour after the screening, and it became even more clear that "Holy Motors" was primarily meant as an allegory about 21st-century filmmaking and the demise of traditional cameras. At one point, he said the new cameras today are not really cameras. "They're more like computers," he said. He feels sad about the rise of digital filmmaking, claiming that it "looks terrible." But "Holy Motors," which was shot 100% on digital, looked gorgeous. Gradually during his remarks, the object of his ire shifted. What really angers him is that he's been unable to make a film since 1999. He had several projects collapse at the last minute because producers won't back him. This has nothing to do with the 21st century or changing technology. This is the age-old problem of cinema being enormously expensive. If anything, it's gotten easier in the digital age because the new technology costs so much less. It's no surprise to me that Carax finally was able to get a project green-lighted now that digital has triumphed. To me, Carax has digital to thank. Furthermore, I suspect that "Holy Motors" is going to succeed well enough financially that he's going to get another project green-lighted in 2013. Holy Digital. While I appreciate Carax's work and consider myself a fan, I wouldn't put him in my pantheon. There's something still just a bit underwhelming about his work.

Preparing For A Short Cruise Holiday : Travel and Leisure - avydeo's ...

You are here: Home / Cruising / Preparing For A Short Cruise Holiday

Gearing up for a short cruise holiday may feel rather frightening. When you are only gone for 3-4 days its very hard to decide how much to take, let alone what sort of clothing you'll need. There additionally are other matters to which to attend, like your pre-cruise check in, booking excursions and setting your travel budget.

Let?s begin with packing. Make certain to fill a carry on suitcase with things you will desire for the first afternoon onboard ship like a camera, bathing suit, private medicine and baby supplies if materiel. Why? Because your baggage won't be delivered for a couple of hours, often arriving as late as 9 pm after dark. Also use your carry on for any property like jewelry so it remains in your control.

As far as your checked luggage goes, think in terms of your last destination and shore excursions. You would like a comfortable pair of trainers, one outfit for the ship?s formal night, film, mix-n-match comfortable clothing and private care products all come straight away to mind. You may additionally want a sweater or a rain coat and extra batteries or film for your camera. While the onboard shops often carry batteries, the prices seem higher than you would pay at home. Finally, avoid over-packing. You need room in your checked bags for keepsakes. If your bag fills up, pack an empty soft side bag and use it to re-pack mucky laundry during your trip, making room for your goodies in the hard-sider.

In terms of paperwork most cruises offer registration on their siteso that you can fill out all mandatory information. Print out all of your travel documents, checking the details and the spelling of your name. If anything is wrong, contact your trip booker immediately for assistance. Also ensure your passport is current, if required.

While you are on the cruise line?s internet site this is a good time to review shore excursion options and book those that are of interest to you most. Remember than some of the outings fill up quickly , having a restricted number of seats. While it could be tantalizing to explore a destination alone, if you are late getting back the ship can leave without you onboard. When you go with an authorised tour group, you don't run that risk so make this step part of gearing up for a short cruise vacation.

It was strange doing a HashOut On Location without a political convention credential hanging around my neck and military personnel visible on every corner. The conventions are long over, however, as is the entire election season, so I felt pulled out of retirement ? like some gritty bank heist protagonist for "one last gig" ? when Yahoo asked me to do a post-election segment.

We planted ourselves in Union Square in San Francisco, and allowed the personalities of that city to find us, and oh did they ever. Badge-wearing city workers, iPod-bearing students and Midwestern tourists all weighed in on the most important task for President Barack Obama during his second term as the smoke from a nearby marijuana cigarette wafted over us.

Most of the answers we got were what I would expect: "fix the economy," "do something about immigration reform," and "bring the country together" topped the list. The "Most Likely To Be A Republican" response came from an Atlanta woman who said, "He needs to stop playing golf, and learn about the economy." The "Most Effective Non-Response" response came from her husband who said the most important thing Obama needs to do is "do something important."

He's a poet, and didn't even know it.

What do you think Obama's most important second-term accomplishment should be? Weigh in via HashOut online, and congratulations America on another successful election.
