The military's sexual assault epidemic

The Pentagon is struggling to quell an epidemic of sexual abuse in the armed services' hierarchical culture

How rife is sexual crime in the services??
It has become a grave concern, particularly as uniformed women take on more roles. Military sexual trauma, which encompasses everything from sexual harassment to rape, is now the leading cause of post-traumatic stress disorder among women in the U.S. military. Female soldiers today are 180 times more likely to be sexually assaulted by a fellow soldier than killed by an enemy. Sufferers often spiral downward into alcohol and substance abuse, depression, and homelessness. "It just pulls the skin off you," said one former Army Reserve officer, who retreated to a mobile home deep in the woods after she was assaulted. But sexual abuse often goes unreported. In 2011, there were around 3,000 official cases of military sexual assault, but a report commissioned by then Defense Secretary Leon?Panetta?put the actual annual number at 19,000 or more. An anonymous survey of more than 1,100 women who served in Afghanistan and Iraq, conducted last year by the Department of Veterans Affairs, found that almost half said they had been sexually harassed, and nearly one quarter said they'd been sexually assaulted.

Why is abuse so rarely reported??
Victims tend to be young, of low rank, and too intimidated to speak out. Often, the superior a soldier reports to is a friend of the perpetrator, or even the perpetrator himself. "How am I supposed to go about reporting something when the person I'm supposed to report to is the person who raped me?" said Virginia?Messick, one of 62 trainees assaulted by instructors at?Lackland?Air Force Base in San Antonio between 2009 and 2012. Victims often figure that any investigation is likely to turn into a he-said-she-said battle that the senior soldier is bound to win. Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Sinclair, who was arraigned by a military court earlier this year on charges of forcible sodomy and sexual misconduct, was initially unconcerned when subordinates questioned his conduct. "I'm a general," he reportedly said. "I'll do whatever the f--- I want."?

What happens when an incident is reported?
Too often, nothing at all. A shocking 92 percent of reported assaults never come before a military court. First responders frequently fail to collect forensic evidence of an assault within the 72-hour deadline stipulated by current guidelines, and more often than not, the victim's superior decides against proceeding to court-martial anyway. Last year, two thirds of all reported cases were either summarily dismissed as unfounded, or resolved by the perpetrators simply being given extra duties or having their pay docked. Of the few defendants referred to court-martial, a tenth opt to resign instead: By admitting their guilt and accepting the perceived punishment of leaving the military, they can avoid prosecution ? civilian or military ? altogether. And before any case goes to trial, a military judge can issue a summary verdict of "consensual sex" that ends the proceedings. That's what happened to Army Reserve Pfc. Sascha Garner, who waited three hours in a courthouse in?Bagram, Afghanistan, before she was informed of the decision. "I just started bawling my eyes out," said Garner. "How can they rule it consensual without even hearing my side of the story?"?

What's being done to change things??
Last year, days after watching? The Invisible War ? an Oscar-nominated documentary on sexual assault in the military ? Defense Secretary?Panetta?announced the creation of a Special Victims Unit in each branch of the military. He implemented new procedures that allow soldiers who report an assault to be transferred out of their units, so they're not subject to pressure or further harassment.?Panetta?also announced that higher-ranking colonels, rather than unit commanders, would decide whether to prosecute cases of sexual assault.?

Why not handle that outside the command structure?
Some have suggested that the U.S. follow the practice of other countries, such as the U.K., by forming an independent military judiciary to rule on sexual assault cases. Such an administrative structure would prevent troubling cases like that of Lt. Col. James Wilkerson, an Air Force pilot who was convicted last year of aggravated sexual assault and sentenced to a year in military prison. In February, Air Force Lt. Gen. Craig Franklin summarily dismissed Wilkerson's conviction as "without merit" and reinstated him to the Air Force ? as he is allowed to do "for any reason or no reason" under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Defense Secretary Chuck?Hagel?said last month that the case raises "a significant question" about whether commanders should have that power and ordered a review.?

Would women be at greater risk in combat??
Some conservatives contend that they would, but the Pentagon says having females on the front line would more likely reduce the military's sexual assault rates. Currently, said Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, "you have one part of the population that's designated as warriors, and another part designated as something else." Giving the sexes equal roles would dispel that disparity and the dangerous "psychology" it fosters, Dempsey suggested, prompting a real change in military culture. For Jenny?McClendon, a Navy officer raped by her superior, that can't come soon enough. "I don't want another generation to feel like they're alone," she said. "Those serving today, I don't want them betrayed."

A double betrayal of trust
Petty Officer Rebecca?Blumer?awoke on Feb. 13, 2010, to find her body bruised and swollen, her insides sore, and a burning pain in her buttocks. She was certain she'd been?"roofied"?and raped, but she soon found the Navy's response almost as distressing as the attack itself: The basic assumption was that it had somehow been her fault. After three days of medical leave,?Blumer?was transferred from intelligence analysis to janitorial duties. "I was a problem, and they wanted to be rid of the problem," said?Blumer. She was shunned and disparaged, and military officials eventually ruled there was no rape. "Maybe it was just heavy petting, or you imagined it?" they suggested. Discharged from the Navy,?Blumer?spiraled into depression and homelessness. She still has regular nightmares. "I loved everything about the Navy," she said. "Now I hate it."

Huntington Ingalls gets $2.6B Navy ship contract

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) -- Huntington Ingalls Industries said Friday that it has won a $2.6 billion contract to refuel and overhaul the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln, a 25-year-old nuclear-powered Naval aircraft carrier.

The company said the ship arrived at its Newport News Shipbuilding division Thursday. Work began immediately and will be complete in November 2016. Huntington Ingalls will refuel the ship's reactors and modernize more than 2,300 compartments, 600 tanks, and hundreds of systems. It also will upgrade the flight deck, catapults, combat systems and the "island," the ship's command center for flight deck operations.

Huntington Ingalls said the price includes costs of the work as well as incentive fees.

The refueling and overhaul was scheduled to start in February, but it was delayed because of concerns about funding and the defense budget. Last week both houses of Congress passed a continuing resolution that will keep the government funded through September 30, the end of its current fiscal year. President Obama signed the stopgap funding measure on Tuesday. Huntington Ingalls said the law allowed the Navy and its shipbuilding division to move ahead with the work.

The Abraham Lincoln was built by Huntington Ingalls' Newport News Shipbuilding unit and launched in February 1988. Huntington Ingalls is the largest military shipbuilder in the U.S., and the company is the biggest industrial employer in Virginia. Newport News Shipbuilding is the nation's only builder of aircraft carriers and one of two submarine builders.

Eiffel Tower evacuated after bomb threat

(AP) ? The Eiffel Tower was evacuated Saturday night after an anonymous caller phoned in a bomb threat, police said.

Nearly 1,400 people were sent away from the tourist attraction following a request from tower operators after the warning, a Paris police official said. Police then searched the monument with sniffer dogs, and set up a security perimeter.

No explosives were found and the site was to be reopened, the official said on condition of anonymity because she wasn't authorized to speak publicly.

French authorities have stepped up counterterrorism measures in recent weeks amid heightened concern about threats to France over its military campaign against al-Qaida-linked fighters in Mali which began more than two months ago.

The tower is occasionally evacuated because of such warnings ? at least once last year and twice in 2011. The 324-meter (1,063-foot) tower is one of the world's top tourist attractions, with millions of visitors a year.

How To Put SEO To Work For Your Business | Content for Reprint

Author: Mishel Roserberg | Total views: 84 Comments: 0
Word Count: 850 Date:

With the right amount of knowledge, you will be able to efficiently increase web traffic through optimization of your website. Read on for more useful SEO tips.

Strive to design each page of your website in a way that makes it stand out from every other. Pay particular attention to the titles you use. These are extremely important for search engine optimization purposes. Including your keyword or phrase in the titles on your pages is important towards ranking highly on search engines.

If you have a site that is written in a non-english language, use the language meta tag. That's because search engines will rank you higher when people do a search for your content in that language.

Research any outside SEO company before signing over the work to them. Lots of SEO companies will charge too much for sub-standard work. Read online reviews and testimonials from previous companies to make sure that the company you're looking to hire is the real deal. Your wallet will thank you later.

Once you have discovered the right key phrases for your website, you should put that key phrase in your title. The first impression of your site is generated by the title, so choose it with care. This way, your site will be clicked because it most fits the search results the user typed in.

Ask yourself the question "how would somebody find my site if they were searching for it?" Then ensure that you have multiple uses of these keywords scattered through your site. Include your keywords in the titles of your pages and throughout your content, but don't overuse them. Stuffing your pages full of keywords will cause the search engines to lower your search ranking.

An important SEO tip is to keep an eye on your search rankings. It is crucial that you track your results to understand how your SEO is doing. One easy way to track your progress is by using the Google Analytics tool.

Retaining the visitors you get from search engines will not only increase your profits, but also your search engine rank. It is proven that spending more time working on a site increases the page rank. This trend has been established through metrics like Quantcast scores. When customers can chat, discuss, and interact with each other on your site, they are more likely to stay longer.

Keywords will help you improve the visibility of your sites. Coordinate your keywords with your article topics. This makes it easier for search engines to index your work. Therefore, it's easier for readers who may be trying to locate your articles. The keyword you want to focus on should appear several times in your article's text, as well as in its title and summary.

There are several options you can use to get inbound links to your website. Article writing, message forums, press releases, directory submissions and blogs can all provide your site with traffic. A great way to improve your SEO is to use good outbound links.

This will help increase your search engine rankings. The meta description appears right under the website link in many search engines, so use this text to grab a potential customer's attention. If you are using a popular CMS, you might be able to edit meta descriptions directly from the control panel.

The most important thing that you can do for your site is to make sure that you always keep the content on the site fresh and unique. People won't want to visit your website if you simply present the same old information indefinitely.

If you want to have successful SEO results, you need a site map. This will make it easier for spiders to crawl on your site. If your site is particularly large, you may need multiple maps. In general, try not to have more than 100 links on each map.

These descriptions will let your web site show up higher in search ratings. The meta description refers to the short description that appears in search results. Use important keywords and encourage your readers to take action and visit your site. Check to see if your content management software makes it easy for you to write a meta description on the same page you create your content on.

Meta tags should be as clear and descriptive as possible. Add a concise description to every meta tag on your site. This will increase click through rates.

Keyword density is vital when you optimize a web page for search engines. Focus on keeping each page's keyword content well under 20 percent.

You should now know that SEO is a very important part of internet marketing. By abiding by the advice in this article, you will be able to optimize your website. As long as your website is of high-quality, you will be more likely to receive a lot of traffic, which will lead to more profits.

Idaho teacher investigated for using word ?vagina? in sex ed lesson

The state of Idaho?s professional-standards commission is investigating a science teacher in the tiny, rural town of Dietrich, because four parents have objected to his use of the word ?vagina? in a 10th-grade biology lesson on human reproduction.

In addition to saying ?vagina,? McDaniel stands accused of describing the biological processes that lead to a human orgasm, discussing birth control, and telling unseemly jokes to his sophomore charges, reports the Times-News of nearby Twin Falls, Idaho.

The group of unnamed parents has also complained that there was an in-class video clip detailing genital herpes infection.

Still another complaint levied by the concerned parents is that McDaniel showed the documentary ?An Inconvenient Truth? in class. The parents say showing professional politician Al Gore?s agitprop on climate change amounts to endorsing a political candidate on school property.

A final claim by the irate parents ? and arguably the most serious one ? is that the science teacher revealed confidential student files with some unspecified person who is not a parent. No further information on this allegation appears to be available.

The teacher, Tim McDaniel, received a letter from the Idaho State Department of Education to McDaniel itemizing the allegations against him.

McDaniel, who says he has taught science classes in Dietrich for 18 years without criticism, is fighting the charges.

?I don?t include anything that the textbook doesn?t mention,? McDaniel claimed, according to the Times-News. He added that he allows students to opt out of sex ed coursework if they want.

As for featuring ?An Inconvenient Truth? in his classroom, McDaniel said he assigned a response paper afterwards.

?I?m not looking for one answer,? he told the Times-News. ?I just want them to be able to explain what they believe.?

Dietrich Superintendent Neil Hollingshead said he doubts McDaniel will lose his job.

?It is highly unlikely it would end with his dismissal,? Hollingshead told the newspaper. ?Maybe a letter of reprimand from the school board.?

McDaniel said he has no intention of signing a letter of reprimand.

?I?ve done nothing wrong,? the science teacher told the Times-News.

In the meantime, a Facebook petition called ?SAVE THE SCIENCE TEACHER!!? has come into existence since this kerfuffle began. Almost 300 people have expressed solidarity with McDaniel thus far.

Valley Fever Fungal Infection on Rise in Southwest - Health News ...

lungs78 Valley Fever Fungal Infection on Rise in Southwest

THURSDAY, March 28 (HealthDay News) ? Cases of a fungal lung infection called Valley Fever increased sharply in several southwestern states since the late 1990s, according to a report released Thursday.

In Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah, the number of cases climbed from less than 2,300 in 1998 to more than 22,000 in 2011, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found.

During that time, Arizona and California had the largest average increases in Valley Fever incidence, at 66 percent and 31 percent per year, respectively.

Valley Fever (Coccidioidomycosis) is caused by inhaling a fungus called Coccidioides, which lives in the soil in southwestern states. Not everyone who is exposed to the fungus gets sick, but those who do become ill typically have flu-like symptoms that can last for weeks or months.

More than 40 percent of patients who get sick may require hospitalization, with an average cost of nearly $50,000 per visit. And research has shown that 75 percent of those who get sick miss work or school for about two weeks, the CDC said.

Between 1998 and 2011, nearly 112,000 cases of Valley Fever were reported in 28 states and Washington, D.C., but 66 percent of the cases were in Arizona, 31 percent were in California, 1 percent were in Nevada, New Mexico and Utah, and about 1 percent were in all other states combined.

More research is needed to determine what is causing the increase in Valley Fever and how to reduce its effects, the CDC said. Possible reasons could be population growth, weather changes that could affect where the fungus grows and how much of it is circulating, or changes in the way the disease is detected and reported to the CDC.

?Valley Fever is causing real health problems for many people living in the southwestern United States,? Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the CDC, said in an agency news release. ?Because fungus particles spread through the air, it?s nearly impossible to completely avoid exposure to this fungus in these hardest-hit states. It?s important that people be aware of Valley Fever if they live in or have traveled to the southwest United States.?

Doctors and patients need to be aware that the symptoms of Valley Fever are very similar to flu or pneumonia symptoms, the CDC said. A lab test is the only way to diagnosis Valley Fever.

Not everyone who gets Valley Fever requires treatment, but early diagnosis and treatment are important for those at risk for the more severe forms of the disease. Those at higher risk for severe disease include people of Asian descent (particularly Filipino), blacks, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems, according to the CDC website.

Blaine GabbertAP

Apparently, Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew wasn?t the only one angry about the anonymous rip jobs on quarterback Blaine Gabbert this offseason.

And Gabbert is willing to admit, to the team?s official website, that he took it personally.

After he was referred to as ?Blame Gabbert,? by anonymous teammates, and an anonymous former coach said ?Nothing?s ever his fault,? Gabbert fired back.

?It pissed me off quite a bit, just because you learn to trust your coaches because you spend so much time with them,? Gabbert said. ?That?s starting now. April 2 through whenever your last game is, you?re with them countless hours every day, six or seven days a week. You learn to value their opinion, trust it. It?s a close-knit grip.

?When you have an anonymous source saying something that couldn?t be further from the truth, it pisses me off. Like I always said, ?Put your name on it.? If you?re going to say something to the media, say it to me. Say who said it. No need to hide behind a computer screen or an anonymous source name when you?re trying to make a point.?

That?s all well and good, and noble, but not the reality of how the NFL works. For one thing, if Gabbert had played to the level he was drafted, he wouldn?t have had as many former coaches saying ugly things about him to choose from.

But Gabbert denied it was motivation.

?When it?s not the truth, it doesn?t really motivate me, although you do have external motivators,? Gabbert said. ?You want to prove every person wrong who says you can?t do your job at a high level. We?re just competitive guys. That?s what makes this job fun.?

The competition begins soon for Gabbert, as they?ll find someone (or two) to go with him and Chad Henne soon.

?The third year is an important year for any quarterback,? Gabbert said. ?It?s where you make the jump. You start playing at a high level. There are still going to be ups and downs. Some guys have off seasons and they?ve been playing 10 years in the NFL. You have to eliminate the peaks and valleys. You have to play at a high level consistently. That?s what I?m looking forward to doing.?

And that?s what the Jaguars are looking for, from Gabbert or someone else.

Brutal group number may doom one of 'Idol' men

By Craig Berman

?American Idol? had two hours of airtime to fill on Wednesday and just eight singers. That meant that in addition to everyone?s solo, each singer also had a group number to worry about.

Frank Micelotta / FOX

Lazaro Arbos will probably be safe.

That was bad news for the guys on the annual Salute to Detroit episode, appropriate for a season that has been a debacle for their gender. Guys have been voted off in each of the last two week, and tomorrow?s results show might make it a trifecta. Their group number was brutal and then they proceeded to shift the blame around to make it even more obvious that the ?Idol? guys are the J.V. talent understudying for the all-star women on the varsity.

?It?s a beautiful day in Hollywood today,? Nicki Minaj said after watching Lazaro Arbos, Burnell Taylor and Devin Velez butcher ?I Can?t Help Myself.? But that wasn?t the compliment it might sound like. ?That?s what I thought, because I thought I was back in Hollywood week! Get off the stage! Go!? she added.

They did, but not fast enough to avoid tarnishing what had been a decent week.

Lazaro Arbos badly needed a strong performance, and he got what he needed in ?For Once in My Life.? The old swagger was back, and he again looked like a pop star, which is a big step forward from the hot mess of the previous two weeks.

?I don?t know if you completely redeemed yourself, but it was much better than last week,? Randy Jackson said. But Nicki was more effusive, crediting herself for her insistence that Lazaro stop listening to Jimmy Iovine?s criticism. Forget Nicki-Mariah ? it?s Nicki-Jimmy that?s the most entertaining ?Idol? feud in years.

Burnell Taylor impressed the judges with his own solo, and continues to be the beneficiary of Randy Jackson?s worship of All Things Louisiana. Meanwhile, much-maligned Devin Velez got a huge endorsement from Nicki, who raved, ?That was an amazing job tonight. I love every single choice that you made tonight.?

Michael Becker / FOX

Burnell Taylor has a fan in judge Randy Jackson.

So, individually, the guys did fine. ?Together ? ugh.

If any of the women crack the bottom three ? and at least one likely will, given Lazaro?s demonstrated fan support, there are a couple of possibilities.

The obvious choice is Amber Holcomb, a surprise member of the unpopular trio a week ago. ?Her ?Lately? by Stevie Wonder got a standing ovation from all four judges, but it?s also the type of performance that has always tended to impress judges more than viewers.

If she?s in trouble again this week, Nicki has some fashion advice. ?If you wear the pink lipstick, you?ll get more votes,? she said.

It could also be Angie Miller, who got something less than raves for the second week in a row. She was dinged last week for being too theatrical. As if to emphasize that point,? Jimmy told her she didn?t need to enunciate like she was in the musical ?My Fair Lady? -- which caused Angie to point out that she had acted in that play in high school. Accentuating a perceived flaw is rarely a good idea.

Randy called it the first time ever he?d heard her give a pitchy performance, but Keith Urban remained optimistic. ?Your talent is undeniable, and we?ll be seeing you next week,? he said.

The other three women all shone, particularly Janelle Arthur. The judges all told her that Kree Harrison ate her lunch in their duet of ?Like a Prayer, ? but she came up huge with her slowed-down cover of ?You Keep Me Hanging On.? ?

?Janelle at her finest!? ?Mariah yelled.

?I absolutely loved it. I thought it was incredible,? Randy says.

So basically, they liked it.

Candice Glover and Kree Harrison bookended the show, either a smart decision or some lucky randomness.? Both are locks to last until May, and aren?t going anywhere. As for the boys ? well, all bets are off.

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? Kobe Bryant has a bone spur in his left foot.

Following Los Angeles' 113-103 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday night, the Lakers revealed the injury. He left the arena using one crutch, but appeared to be walking without pain.

Bryant led the Lakers with 30 points, leaving him four points behind Wilt Chamberlain for fourth place on the NBA's career list. Bryant played 36? minutes and didn't show any signs of difficulty during the game.

"Inflamed on me. I'll be all right," Bryant told Yahoo Sports.

Bryant struggled from the field, going 6 of 17, but made 18 of 20 free throws.

HBT: Yankees top Forbes' MLB franchise valuations

This comes out every year: Forbes? team valuations and the breakdown of who?s making money, who?s losing money and all that jazz.

You?ll not be surprised to see that the Yankees are the most valuable, the Rays the least. Still, the Rays? value increased from year-to-year by 40% and they cleared $10 million. ?Owning a baseball team is like printing money, really.

For most teams anyway. Forbes claims that six teams in baseball lost money last year: the Angels, Rangers, Marlins, Blue Jays, Mets and Tigers. Of course all those numbers have to be taken with a grain of salt given what we know about the books of Major League Baseball teams: virtually nothing. And we know that many teams pay their owners various fess and things for amorphous reasons and unknown tasks, all of which negatively impacts the team?s bottom line while clearly not harming the owners a bit. ?Ask Jeff Loria how that works.

It?s a nice snapshot, but not much more. There just isn?t enough data out there for anyone to check these numbers and the only people in a position to correct them ? the owners themselves ? wouldn?t dare reveal what they really make or lose.

Mazda6 - 15,000 units recalled over electrical issue

mazda6

Over in Australia, Mazda has initiated a safety-related recall programme for 1,531 units of its Mazda6 to rectify a potential quality issue with the vehicle?s electrical system.

The recall will eliminate a potential fault with a component in the DC/DC convertor that is located under the front passenger seat. The DC/DC converter is part of the car?s i-ELOOP brake energy recuperation system, which uses a capacitor to power the vehicle?s electrical components.

The company says that the fault may cause overheating of the unit and in a worst case scenario, a fire may result. Rectification of the issue will see the DC/ DC convertor replaced free of charge.

mazda i-eloop

The i-ELOOP system features a new 12-25V variable voltage alternator, a low-resistance electric double layer capacitor and the aforementioned DC/DC converter. Through kinectic energy from deceleration, the variable voltage alternator generates electricity at up to 25V for maximum efficiency before sending it to the Electric Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC) for storage.

The DC/DC converter then steps down the electricity from 25V to 12V before it is distributed directly to the vehicle?s electrical components. The system also charges the vehicle battery as necessary.

A total of approximately 15,000 Mazda6s globally are subject to the recall, including the Australian examples. The car was officially launched in Malaysia last week; there?s no word of the recall here.

Sonos Playbar review: an excellent (and expensive) home theater addition

Sonos Playbar review an excellent and expensive home theater addition

Sonos has found a sweet spot in the audio world. Its wireless technology and ability to stream music from almost any source -- be it from the cloud or local storage -- have given it considerable geek cred, yet its simple setup still offers mass appeal. Of course, none of that would matter if its systems didn't sound good, but fortunately, Sonos' Play:3, Play:5 and its Sub have all impressed with the quality of audio they produce. The $699 Playbar is the newest member of the family, and with this product, Sonos is setting its sights squarely on the home theater market. Is it fit for your living room? Read on to find out.

What A Resume Should Look Like | Content for Reprint

Looking for a job is tough enough, but now they say you need this thing called a resume. I have heard about them from time to time; but never really needed one. At my age all I have ever done is to walk into a company and inquire whether they were hiring or not. If they were, I would just sit down and fill out an application, and probably interview right then and there and get hired right on the spot. I don't even know what a resume should look like. I do know that it doe's require some employment history; but, beyond that I really can't tell you. I would like to find a professional writer and have them take care of it for me since I need it to apply for a very special job.

I believe that I have found a really good resume writer, and have supplied her with all of the information that she has asked for. Of course, I had to give her all of my contact information; then she talked for quite a while about what I had accomplished over the years, I know that she was trying to get a grasp of my skills and knowledge. After this she wanted to go over all of my skills individually, I was impressed that she also utilized my transferable skills as well as my technical skills. I didn't realize how important these skills were, but when you think about it, it does make sense. Things that you have done all of your life are important with how you maintain your work habits such as your organizational abilities, whether you are a leader or a follower. Other things like, are you good at resolving problems or issues and how well do you communicate with others. There was a lot of information that I found out about myself and didn't even give it a second thought prior to this.

When all was said and done I picked up my brand new resume; I astounded myself with all that I could do. It is apparently just how you represent yourself on paper in a formal manner. It was beautiful, nice, clean and crisp with an attractive header with my name large and bold followed by my personal contact information then below that was my skill set all across the top in nice neat columns) which again, were my (transferable and technical skills) incorporated together. Then a very strong summary about what I had accomplished throughout my career. It was very powerful and to sum it up; it basically showed what I had to offer a company, what I had to put on the table and here is why you want to hire me!

Then this was all followed by my work history with small job descriptions followed by a couple of very appealing bullets of more notable accomplishments. They each had about 4-5 bullets for each position that I had held. We only went back three jobs, because that covered well over 13 years and there was no need to bore the employer with my earlier years; you can gain a lot of knowledge over ten years and that is about all that they need or want. Then education, and the last section covered was my community memberships, volunteer work and such; it looked really nice I must say.

When you looked at it you could see that the top half of this sold me! You could find exactly what you were looking for; if you were looking for specific skills or accomplishments you knew exactly where to look. I loved it? I will be honest with you, I could have never done this; hiring a professionals was the smartest move I have ever made because this is what a resume SHOULD look like.,

AP sources: SD Sen. Johnson won't seek re-election

Ghanbari, File)

(AP) ? Democratic U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson of South Dakota intends to announce plans to retire when his term ends next year, Democratic officials told The Associated Press on Monday.

Johnson, the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, suffered a brain hemorrhage in 2006 and later returned to the Senate and won re-election in 2008 while sometimes using a motorized scooter.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to pre-empt Johnson's formal announcement, expected Tuesday in South Dakota.

His departure gives Republicans a prime opportunity to pick up a seat in a deeply conservative state. Johnson is the fifth Democratic incumbent to announce plans not to run again in 2014, joining Carl Levin of Michigan, Tom Harkin of Iowa, Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia and Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey.

Some South Dakota Democrats have promoted the idea that the senator's son, U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson, should seek the Democratic nomination if his father retired. Another possible candidate is former U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin.

Former GOP Gov. Mike Rounds previously announced his candidacy for the seat. Rounds was a state senator from 1991 to 2001 before serving two terms as governor from 2003 to 2011. After leaving office in early 2011, Rounds returned to his job as president and CEO of an insurance and real estate company based in Pierre.

The Democratic senator had surgery in 2006 to stop bleeding in his brain caused by arteriovenous malformation, a condition that causes arteries and veins in the brain to grow abnormally large, become tangled and sometimes burst. Johnson has made huge strides in recovering, but his speech is slowed and he sometimes uses a motorized scooter when he needs to get around quickly.

Johnson was elected to the U.S. House in 1986 and to the Senate in 1996. He was re-elected in 2002 and 2008. He also previously served in the Legislature.

BAGHDAD (AP) ? The U.S. has made clear to Iraq that it shouldn't allow Iran to use its airspace to ship weapons and fighters to Syria, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry told reporters Sunday during an unannounced trip to Baghdad.

Kerry's comments come as U.S. lawmakers are calling for President Barack Obama to do more to stop the bloodshed in Syria, including possible airstrikes against Syrian President Bashar Assad's aircraft fleet. U.S. officials say ongoing efforts to aid opposition groups in Syria have been undermined by Iran, which is using Iraqi airspace without objections by Iraq.

On Sunday, Kerry said Iraq's tacit approval of Iranian overflights left the American people "wondering how it is a partner."

"I made it very clear that for those of us who are engaged in an effort to see President Assad step down ... anything that supports President Assad is problematic," Kerry said following a private discussion with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

The Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Mike Rogers of Michigan, on Sunday called for a greater U.S. presence in the Syrian conflict to prevent chemical and conventional weapons from falling into the wrong hands. He said the U.S. should create a "safe zone" in northern Syria that would give the U.S. more leverage with opposition forces.

"This doesn't mean the 101st Airborne Division and ships" are deployed, Rogers told CBS' "Face the Nation." ''It means small groups with special capabilities reengaging the opposition so we can vet them, train them, equip them so they can be an effective fighting force."

Rogers' comments reflect an increasingly frustrated Congress that sees unrest in Syria as dangerous to U.S. interests. Last week, Sens. Carl Levin, D-Mich., and John McCain, R-Ariz., asked Obama in a letter to step up U.S. military efforts in the region, including destroying Assad's aircraft using precision airstrikes.

The overflights in Iraq have long been a source of contention between the U.S. and Iraq

U.S. officials say that in the absence of a complete ban on flights, the U.S. would at least like the planes to land and be inspected in Iraq to ensure that they are carrying humanitarian supplies. Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton secured a pledge from Iraq to inspect the flights last year, but since then only two aircraft have been checked by Iraqi authorities, according to U.S. officials.

One senior U.S. official said the sheer number of overflights, which occur "close to daily," along with shipments trucked to Syria from Iran through Iraq, was inconsistent with claims they are only carrying humanitarian supplies. The official said it was in Iraq's interest to prevent the situation in Syria from deteriorating further, particularly as there are fears that al-Qaida-linked extremists may gain a foothold in the country as the Assad regime falters.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak publicly, said there are clear links between al-Qaida linked extremists operating in Syria and militants who are also carrying out terrorist attacks in Iraqi territory with increasing regularity.

In addition to al-Maliki, Kerry saw Iraqi parliament speaker parliament speaker Osama al-Nujaifi, a Sunni, whose faction is at odds with Maliki's Shiia. Kerry also spoke by phone with Massoud Barzani, the head of the Kurdish Regional Government based in Irbil to encourage the Kurds not go ahead with unilateral actions - especially involving oil, like a pipeline deal with Turkey.

Kerry's arrival came just three days after the anniversary of the U.S.-led war that began on March 20, 2003, with an airstrike on Dora Farms in southern Baghdad in a failed attempt to kill Hussein.

The invasion and toppling of Hussein sparked years of bloodshed as Sunni and Shiite militants battled U.S. forces and each other, leaving nearly 4,500 U.S. soldiers and more than 100,000 Iraqis dead.

Violence has ebbed sharply since the peak of Sunni-Shiite fighting that pushed the country to the brink of civil war in 2006 and 2007. But insurgents are still able to stage high-profile attacks, and sectarian and ethnic rivalries remain threats to the country's long-term stability.

Earlier this week, an al-Qaida in Iraq front group claimed responsibility nearly 20 attacks that killed 65 people across the country on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Islamic State of Iraq said it unleashed the car bombs and other explosions to avenge the executions and "massacres" of convicted Sunni inmates held in Iraqi prisons. Its claim came on the 10th anniversary of the start of the war, although it made no reference to the significance of the date.

Kerry arrived in Baghdad from Amman, where he had been accompanying President Barack Obama on his tour of Israel, the Palestinian Authority and Jordan. His visit to Iraq is the first by a U.S. secretary of state since Clinton went in April 2009. During Obama's first term, the Iraq portfolio was largely delegated to Vice President Joe Biden.

Since Clinton's trip, the American diplomatic presence in Iraq has shrunk dramatically, most significantly since U.S. ended military operations in late 2011, according to officials. A year ago, there were 16,000 State Department employees and contractors in the country. As of Kerry's visit, that number had declined to 10,500 and it will drop to 5,100 by the end of 2013, officials said.
