What is your favorite animal?

I had the thought that making a little get to know thread such as this would be fun, basically this thread will be open for people to say what their favorite animal is and if possible also expand on it by describing the animal and the reasons they like it.

I am a cat person and i adore my cats however the animal with whom i am most fascinated with is the Crow.

To explain why a short but remarkable childhood story is necessary

When i was younger my family used to have quite a few chickens in our land along with some ducks

the problem was that the crows used to steal the little chicks from both, while the chickens could protect at least a few of their chicks even against amazingly clever crow tactics the ducks where useless and lost all of theirs.

One day a young crow got wounded in a fight and fell down near our house.
my dad picked him up and at first was thinking of killing him and hanging his body to scare of the crows but after having the young crow for an entire night decided he could not do it and instead looked after the crow until he could fly back to his parents who where keeping and eye on what was going on.

after my father let the young crow go the crows never again attacked our chicks and even warned us from other attacks by making a lot of noise each time dogs or other animals tried to kill our chickens.

since then i have been fascinated by the crow and while we lived in that area i used to offer them gifts sometimes.
I have a respect for the crow for this reason along with others but beyond their intelligence i see crows as being mentally the creature most similar to humans. Their behavior when it comes to ether creating tools and even sports is balanced by their nasty habits of taking over other nests and driving out other animals from their lands is similar to humanity's own behavior. The crow can adapt to many conditions and beyond that has a all too familiar love for shiny objects.

If i where to point towards the successors of humanity the crow would be my choice.

deleted because it was stupid

Pets & Their Surprising Health Benefits

There?s only so much broccoli you can eat and soft drinks that you can?t. While diet and exercise play a gargantuan role in the state of our physical health, scientists and doctors are increasingly?realizing?just how important our mental health is and the impact it has on our physical.

So while more and more of us sift through the positive thinking and self help books looking for a cure, trying various yoga positions and learning how to meditate, an increasing number of people are finding ? as humans have always done ? that pets have a surprising number of health benefits. The research seems to back it up as well, as the following studies will show.

But wait, I don?t have a pet!

It?s very easy to dismiss such evidence by saying that you don?t have a pet. If you truly connect with the research and feel that pets are something you should have in your life, but for certain reasons can?t, try one of these three options.

1)????? Look after your friend?s pets: Everybody who has a cat or a dog will be more than grateful if you agree to look after them for a weekend so that they can get away. Even if you can?t do that, just offering to take the dog out for a stroll is a godsend to most people.

2)????? Become a pet sitter: Pet owners who are planning to go away on a longer vacation, and don?t have any friends who are able to look after their animals while they?re away, are increasingly using pet sitting websites to connect with people who are willing. While it may mean that you only look after pets for a couple of weeks of the year it could be the most relaxing few weeks of your year as well!

3)????? Get a fish: Most people, regardless of their circumstances are able to look after a fish, and although you can?t cuddle them, fish have been shown to have relaxing benefits as well.

The Studies

Pets reduce blood pressure

Pet owners tend to have lower blood pressure than those that don?t according to recent studies. Scientists are still trying to work out whether this is due to the comfort they bring, or as Queen?s University in Belfast propose, because of the walking that?s involved with dogs, which has separately been proven to lower blood pressure.

Pets are good for the ageing

Pet owners tend to have a lower rate of diseases like Alzheimer?s than their non-pet-owning counterparts according to Lynette Hart, PhD, associate professor at the University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. The jury is still out on what the exact benefits are, but one insurance company, Midland Life, is known to ask patients over 75 if they have a pet, which has been said to reduce life insurance policy rates.

Pets can get you a date!

According to a study carried out by pet social networking site Kloof, there are five breeds of dogs that make both men and women who own them more desirable to date. Beagles, Poodles and Chihuahuas are good for attracting men, while Siberian Huskies and German Shepherds tend to attract women. Retrievers, both golden and Labrador, seem to work on both sexes.

US Oct. jobs report likely to show modest hiring

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The October employment report the government will release Friday will likely solidify the picture of the U.S. job market that's emerged this year: Companies are hiring steadily but cautiously. And unemployment remains high.

Economists forecast that employers added 121,000 jobs in October, according to FactSet. That would be up slightly from September but below this year's average monthly gain of 146,000. And it's too weak a hiring pace to quickly reduce unemployment.

Analysts think the unemployment rate rose to 7.9 percent from 7.8 percent in September.

Friday's report is the last broad snapshot of the economy before Tuesday's presidential election. Any increase in the rate would mean that President Barack Obama would face voters with the highest unemployment rate of any incumbent since Franklin Roosevelt.

In 1976, President Gerald Ford lost to Jimmy Carter when unemployment was 7.8 percent.

A weak job report would also provide ammunition for GOP challenger Mitt Romney, who has charged that Obama's policies have held back the economic recovery.

On the other hand, Obama might benefit from recent declines in unemployment. The 7.8 percent rate in September was the lowest since Obama entered office in January 2009. The rate dropped by a half-point in just August and September.

Yet it's unclear how much political effect any economic report will have. By this point, all but a few voters have made up their minds, particularly about the economy.

"People have given this a lot of thought," said Andrew Kohut, president of the Pew Research Center. "One report, unless it is a real shocker, is unlikely to affect their view of whether Obama has done a good job with the economy or if Romney would do a better job."

The recent drop in unemployment has heartened consumers, who are more confident and spending more. That's providing much-needed support to the still-weak economy.

The Conference Board said Thursday that its index of consumer confidence surged to 72.2 in October, its highest level since February 2008, two months into the Great Recession.

The index is still below the level of 90 that's consistent with a healthy economy. But it's far above its all-time low of 25.3 in February 2009, in the midst of the financial crisis.

Americans are buying more big-ticket items, like cars and appliances. Auto companies reported steady sales gains last month despite losing three days of business to the storm in heavily populated areas of the Northeast.

Yet businesses remain nervous about the economy's future course. Many are concerned that Congress will fail to reach a budget deal before January. If lawmakers can't strike an agreement, sharp tax increases and spending cuts will take effect next year and possibly trigger another recession.

American companies are also nervous about the economic outlook overseas. Europe's financial crisis has pushed much of that region into recession and cut into U.S. exports and corporate profits.

But steady consumer spending is supporting gains in U.S. factory production. The Institute for Supply Management, a private trade group, said manufacturing activity expanded for the second straight month in October.

New orders and production rose, the ISM's survey found. The increase came mainly in consumer-oriented industries such as furniture, food and beverages, and computers. Demand for machinery, chemical products, steel and other metals fell.

In a rare dose of healthy news for the global economy, China's manufacturing improved in October, two business surveys showed Thursday. The world's second-largest economy may be recovering from its deepest slump since the 2008 global crisis.

Analysts expect China's growth to strengthen this quarter. But they caution that the rebound will be too weak to drive a global recovery without improvement in the United States and Europe.

Pets-National Dog Monument

NATURAL BALANCE/THE ASSOCIATED PRESSWar handler veteran, author and designer John Burnam, left, and veteran portrait sculptor Paula Slater stand with the silicon bronze 9.5-feet tall military dog handler that is part of the U.S. Working Dogs Teams National Monument shown in the sculptor's studio in Hidden Valley Lake, in Calif.

Special Projects Dept. ? AP

LOS ANGELES -- The act of Congress is in the books, the bills are paid, the sculptures are being cast, and one of the biggest parades in the world will start a glory tour and countdown to dedication.

The first national monument to pay tribute to military dogs will be unveiled in California in just two months. The U.S. Working Dog Teams National Monument will honor every dog that has served in combat since World War II.

Some cities, cemeteries and military bases across the country already have such memorials. But none has been elevated to national monument level, where it will be in the company of the Statue of Liberty, Yosemite National Park and Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

In 2000, John Burnam, a 65-year-old veteran military dog handler, wrote a book called "Dog Tags of Courage." A year later, he got an email from a reader wondering why there were no national monuments to the dogs of war.

In "Dog Tags" and a 2008 book, "A Soldier's Best Friend," Burnam wrote about his time with the Army's 44th Scout Dog Platoon when he was in Vietnam in 1967 and 1968.

Burnam spent most of his tour with a German shepherd named Clipper.

"He saved my life and saved the lives of others by alerting on ambushes, snipers and booby traps. I wanted to give something back to these animals that have done so much and asked for so little, except for food and water and the love of their handlers," said Burnam, who received the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

Back then, handlers were not able to adopt their dogs when they were retired.

In 2004, Burnam and two other dog handler veterans pursued the idea in earnest, forming the John Burnam Monument Foundation Inc. But it took two more years, until he met Rep. Walter B. Jones, R-N.C., that the monument project started to take shape.

In 2007, Jones introduced legislation authorizing establishment of the monument. Passed unanimously by Congress, it was signed the next year by President George W. Bush, then amended and signed by President Barack Obama.

Burnam designed the monument, which depicts the modern military handler and four dogs -- a Doberman, German shepherd, Labrador retriever and Belgian Malinois, all breeds used in wars.

The silicon bronze handler stands more than 9 feet tall and weighs 1,500 pounds. Each dog is about 5 feet tall and weighs 550 pounds. Burnam called them "hero-sized."

The figures will stand on a pedestal, in front of a large granite wall. One side of the wall will have photos etched in black marble veneer showing dog teams in combat from the different wars. The other side will have an inscription written by Burnam.

The sculptor, Paula Slater, said it was the largest and most complex monument she had ever done. She worked for thousands of hours, saying that finishing a project of that size "is like giving birth to a baby -- five of them."

The money for the monument came slowly. Burnam made one of many fundraising pitches on the reality TV show "Who Let the Dogs Out," featuring Tillman, the skateboarding, surfing and snowboarding bulldog.

"Don't do a thing. Natural Balance and Petco (Animal Supplies Inc.) will take care of it," Joey Herrick said. To raise funds for the monument and its maintenance, Natural Balance created a jerky bark treat sold by Petco. Maddie's Fund, a family-funded pet rescue foundation, also signed on as a corporate sponsor.

The public will get a sneak peak of the monument at the Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena on Jan. 1, when a floral replica will be used as Natural Balance's float.

When the float goes on display afterward at Victory Park, the real bronze monument will make its public debut next to it, Herrick said. Then the bronze monument will go on tour as it heads to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. The location was chosen as the site for the monument because that's where most of the nation's military's dogs are trained.

Meanwhile, Tillman, the dog that helped get Burnam the monument funding, is also getting personal recognition for his military service. For his work entertaining troops at bases and for going through a mini Marine boot camp, the athletic bulldog has been made an honorary private first class.

Stanford researchers create 'world's first' all-carbon solar cell, do it on the cheap

Harnessing the awesome power of the Sun isn't just dependent on the efficiency of solar cells, but also on making them affordable. Current techniques aren't exactly cheap, but researchers from Stanford University think they've made a bit of a breakthrough by producing a relatively inexpensive photovoltaic cell using nothing but carbon. We're sure other scientists might disagree with the 'world's first' claim, but those at Stanford think it's a matter of language, and that these other pretenders are "referring to just the active layer in the middle, not the electrodes." The team selected a trio of carbon types to use in their cell: a mixture of nanotubes and buckyballs make up the light-absorbing layer, while graphene is being utilized for the electrodes.

The carbon amalgam can be applied from solution using simple methods, meaning the flexible cells could be used to coat surfaces, although you won't be seeing it smeared over anything too soon. The prototype only touts a "laboratory efficiency of less than 1 percent," so it can't compete with traditional solar cells just yet. Also, it only absorbs a slither of the light spectrum, but the researchers are looking to other forms of the wonder element which could increase that range. They are hoping that improving the structure of the cells will help to boost their efficiency, too. They might never generate the most energy, but the all-carbon cells can remain stable under extreme conditions, meaning they could find their calling in harsh environments where brawn is a little more important than status, or looks.

Genes Make Redheads More Likely to Get Skin Cancer : Science ...

The risk of skin cancer is higher for redheads and sun exposure doesn't make much of a difference, says a new study.

People with fair, freckled skin and red hair produce a different kind of melanin than people who have darker skin. The difference is caused due to a mutation in the gene MC1R. The resulting pigment called pheomelanin is less effective in protecting the skin from the harmful UV radiation than eumelanin - the kind of melanin found in the darker skin.

Follow us

"There is something about the redhead genetic background that is behaving in a carcinogenic fashion, independent of UV. It means that shielding from UV would not be enough," said lead author David Fisher, a cancer biologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

For the study, sets of mice were tested for development of skin cancer. All mice were identical except for the gene that's associated with melanoma production. The genetically altered mice were also equally more susceptible for developing skin cancer.

Researchers found that mice that had the redhead pigment were more likely to develop skin cancer than dark-skin mice.

There was also a third group of mice in the study - the albino redhead - that didn't produce any pigment. Researchers found that these mice didn't develop skin cancer.

"There's no doubt that the majority of melanomas are caused by UV radiation from the sun - and protecting your skin in the sun is crucial - but this work suggests that there may be other paths to melanoma in red-haired, freckly people," said Julia Newton-Bishop, from the Cancer Research UK Centre at the University of Leeds.

According to estimates from National Cancer Institute, more than 76,000 new cases will be reported this year and more than 9,000 people will die from the cancer in the U.S.

Melanoma occurs as a mole on skin but can also occur in the eye or intestines, says NCI.

"The risk for people with this skin type has not changed, but now we know that blocking UV radiation - which continues to be essential - may not be enough," said Dr David Fisher, from Massachusetts General Hospital.
