UK baseball season previews: Riddle helps anchor dynamic defense

Editor's note: this is the seventh of a 10-part Kentucky baseball preseason feature, leading up to UK's preseason media day on Feb. 4. Ranked as high as No. 8 in the preseason, Kentucky will open up its 2013 season in Spartanburg, S.C., vs. UNC-Asheville on Feb. 15. Part one (Trevor Gott), part two (Walter Wijas), part three (Matt Reida), part four (Jerad Grundy), part five (Zac Zellers), part six (A.J. Reed), part seven (Austin Cousino).

Kentucky's junior class came to Lexington with three players who had been named the player of the year in the state: Trevor Gott, Corey Littrell and J.T. Riddle.

Each of the three earned a different Kentucky High School Player of the Year award: Gott the Gatorade version, Littrell the Louisville Slugger Player of the Year and Riddle Kentucky High School Coaches Association Mr. Baseball honors.

Flash forward to their junior season in 2013 and each of the three enters the year able to make a strong case that he is the best player, or one of the best players, in the NCAA at his respective position.

Riddle, a native of Frankfort, has been an everyday starter since forcing the coaching staff to find a positional home for him as a true freshman. In 2011, Riddle saw starts at second base and rightfield and showcased what would become his calling card, dynamic defensive ability with jaw-dropping range, arm strength and instincts.

As a freshman Riddle hit .288 in 50 games and 43 starts, with nine doubles, three homers and 25 RBI. After earning all-star starting honors at shortstop in the Great Lakes League during the 2011 summer, Riddle continued his development into a sophomore campaign.

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound left-handed hitter, started all 63 games at second base in 2012, forming a lock-down defensive duo with shortstop Matt Reida. The pair of middle infielders helped the Wildcats shatter the school record for fielding percentage (.976), with both ranking among the UK all-time leaders in defensive assists at their positions.

"It is really the core of our whole defense, to be good up the middle," Riddle said. "Of course the catching position and then the middle infield and the outfield can have a big impact on the type of defensive team you have. Matt and I have played a whole season up the middle together and are now juniors. Because we have played a lot since our freshman year, we have a lot of experience, know what to expect in the SEC. We have both improved so much over the last two years and this past fall."

At the plate as a junior, Riddle hit .279 with 12 doubles, one triple, five homers and 38 RBI, adding a .260 average in 30 SEC games. He finished with 19 two-out hits, 12 two-out RBI and a .347 on-base percentage.

After the year, Riddle continued to break out on the prospect map as a future top-five round MLB Draft pick. He hit .232 in 38 games in the Cape Cod League for Orleans, with seven doubles, two triples, two homers and 15 RBI. Most impressively, Riddle led the Cape Cod League in defensive assists, despite playing second base every day for the Firebirds.

"It was a great experience for me," Riddle said. "It got me away, really for the first time, away from family and friends. Got to play the game, get to know some new friends up there and enjoy the experience of playing against the best college players in the nation. It really helped me improve and realize where I stand at and that I can play with the best of the best."

Riddle returned to Lexington for the fall semester and focused on adding strength to his projectable frame and helping the team build on its great chemistry from 2012.

"It helps so much because baseball is such a team sport," Riddle said. "If you don't have that chemistry then you aren't going to be successful. Last year, the whole team bonded really good, had great chemistry together and we had the best season in the history of the program. Our chemistry is great right now and it needs to stay like that all the way through June."

He had a great fall practice season and is poised to not only continued his success at the plate and in the field, but emerge as a more vocal leader for a preseason top-10 ranked UK club.

Mike Robbins: Nothing Changes Until You Do

In a recent session with my counselor Eleanor, she said something simple but profound to me: "Nothing changes until you do." She went on to say, "Mike, you keep trying to control and manipulate the situations, relationships, and outcomes in your life -- thinking that if they changed in the way you want them to, you'd then change and things would be better. It actually works the other way around."

The truth of Eleanor's feedback resonated deeply with me and I've been contemplating it for the past few weeks. I realize that much more of my attention than I'd like to admit is focused on my attempts to change the circumstances, situations, and people around me -- instead of focusing on the only thing I can really change, me.

As Dr. Wayne Dyer says, "When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change."

We've all had this experience in our lives in both big and small ways. Do you ever notice how when we're having a bad day or a rough time in life, even the people and activities we normally love don't bring us the same amount of joy, fulfillment, and satisfaction? On the flip side, when we're having a great day or things are going really well in life, even people or circumstances that might normally upset or annoy us somehow seem much more manageable and less stressful. In those simple situations, our perspective and our own internal state have a big impact on how we experience life, not the other way around.

What if we put more attention on our own growth, change, and transformation -- and less attention on trying to fix, change, and alter the people and circumstances around us? This doesn't mean that we'd stop caring about what other people do or say. It also doesn't mean we wouldn't give feedback or make requests of those around us. And, we wouldn't stop working towards specific changes, goals, and dreams related to the most important aspects of our lives -- our work, our health, our finances, our family, and more.

However, by letting go of our insatiable desire to fix and change everyone and everything around us, we give ourselves the space to focus our attention on the true source of our own happiness, success, and fulfillment -- ourselves!

As we come to the end of this first month of the new year, many of us are still quite focused on our intentions, goals, and resolutions for 2013. As great as the accomplishment of any specific goal may be, what we're almost always after with our resolutions, is positive and sustainable change.

As the saying goes, "The roots create the fruits." This means that it's our job to focus on our own growth, development, and internal transformation -- and in so doing, we put ourselves in the best possible position to create the kind of change we truly want. Nothing changes until we change!

Changes to Personal Injury Applications for Assistance

Circular No: NP/029/13

Our ref: LA/019/12

30th January 2013

TO ALL BRANCHES, REGIONAL COUNCILS AND REGIONAL OFFICES

Dear Colleague,

Changes to Personal Injury Applications for Assistance.

I am pleased to advise that we have been able to agree with Thompsons that our arrangements with them regarding wills, and advices shall continue but due to the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012, we will need to change our system of referrals for personal injury cases as it is a legal requirement that members access the RMT legal service for personal injury cases by instructing RMT Solicitors, Thompsons, direct. This can be done by members ringing 08457 125 495 or by sending an RMT Legal Assistance Form L1 to TUCH Arundel House 1 Furnival Square Sheffield S1 4QL. Where a member contacts the branch with the form, the branch should ensure the member sends it direct to Thompsons at the above address or rings the claim through on 08457 125 495 (no paper work required). As at present, the branch can of course keep a copy of the form L1 for their own records.

This only affects members in England and Wales.

I will keep you informed of further developments in this matter and I would be grateful if you could bring the contents of this circular to the attention of your members and implement the changes with immediate effect.

Yours sincerely

Bob Crow
General Secretary

Harrisburg schools saddled with debt and growing exodus to charter schools, says Veno

"It's time we called on corporate leaders in this community to invest in this community." - Gene Veno

HARRISBURG ? Two trends threaten Harrisburg School District's future financial success, said state-appointed chief recovery officer Gene Veno: increasing payments for past debt and a growing exodus of students to charter schools.

Veno presented an overview of the district's situation ? as he sees it ? during a public meeting Tuesday night, Jan. 29.

Only about 30 people attending the meeting, including school board members, presenters and the media, but Veno said, "It's not about the attendance; it's about the message."

That message was summarized in a brief history and two slides.

Veno explained that even though the school district closed five schools and furloughed one-third of its staff ? more than 500 people ? last year, this year's budget is still nearly 7 percent higher than before the cuts, and the the district is facing a budget deficit of $11.7 million.

Then he showed the slides.

Debt service payments this year are $15.3 million and expected to rise to $21.4 million during the next four years.

That's a structural problem that is neither the fault of the current school board nor easy to fix, said Veno.

The next slide showed a growing exodus of students ? more than 2,000 ? to charter schools during the past five years.

This year, Veno said, payments to charter schools cost $8.4 million.

And charter schools in this area, he noted, are just ramping up.

"I do not speak for or against charter schools," said Veno, but the reality in Harrisburg next year is $14.7 million "will go right off the budget" because of them.

That's a structural problem that can be fixed, he said, by improving the school district's image and performance.

Veno noted that the most recent standardized test results showed 38 percent of Harrisburg students are below basic in math, and 42 percent were below basic in reading.

Only 45 percent of students graduated last year.

To help the school district address its performance and come up with strategies to improve curriculum and teaching, Veno brought in former Secretary of Education Francis V. Barnes.

To help sort out finances and develop a funding strategy, he brought in financial experts from PFM. Among their responsibilities will be to conduct a forensic audit of the district's historic finances to find out exactly why things "aren't adding up" even after the cuts from last year.

"You can only cut so much," he said.

Veno has floated a 2.5 percent tax increase for the next school year, but even that will come nowhere near to plugging the budget hole. Nor will using the district's roughly $4 million fund balance, he said.

But simply raising taxes each year to fix that year's problem cannot continue to be the only solution.

"That has to stop," he said.

Another avenue, he said, would be going to the city's tax-exempt nonprofits and corporate leaders.

"It's time we called on corporate leaders in this community to invest in this community," Veno said. "Everyone in the community is accountable for the success" of Harrisburg School.

"I'm not here to sell a plan," Veno said. "We don't have one done yet."

But he pledged that as his team moved forward they would be thinking "outside the box, on top of the box, nowhere near the box."

Amazon Focuses On Cloud Video With Elastic Transcoder Services ...

Another move today from Amazon that speaks to its growing presence in content delivery and enterprise services, done at competition-beating prices: today the company launched Elastic Transcoder, a new service that lets people upload digital video and put it into formats ? h264, AAC and mp4 for now ? that are usable on devices like smartphones and tablets, as well as PCs. Amazon hopes to lure in users with the promise of 20 minutes of free transcoding each month, but after that it offers pricing tiers based on SD or HD format and length of video, starting at $0.015 for SD or $0.030 for HD per minute, a big discount on existing services like Zencoder.

Interestingly, unlike some of Amazon?s services that see very gradual regional rollouts, this one is launching from day-one with availability for the U.S., Europe and Asia.

Price is not the only area that Amazon is disrupting with the new service: it?s also about significantly easier online video creation, coming at a time when online video consumption is rapidly increasing.

In the past, customers would have had to buy their own video transcoding software (or use existing, but more expensive, cloud services like Zendcoder.). Then users need to create settings for specific devices, which can be filled with errors and time consuming. These services can also be a drain on your computer systems. Amazon?s Elastic Transcoder works with presets to elimate some of that work, plus an architecture that minimizes the strain on your systems to convert multiple files simultaneously ? something that will appeal to those working with larger files.

?Our customers told us that it was difficult and expensive to transcode video due to the explosion in the number of devices they need to support,? said Charlie Bell, Vice President of Utility Computing Services, in a statement. ?They had to be both experts in the intricacies of video support on different devices and manage the software required to run the transcoding jobs. None of this work had anything to do with their goal: getting a high quality video that would look great on the devices they wanted. We built Amazon Elastic Transcoder to give our customers an easy, cost effective way to solve these problems.?

The Elastic Transcoder service plays on two sides of Amazon?s business interests. The first is its increasing presence in cloud-based storage and also services wrapped around that.

These services are often aimed at both larger enterprises and developers and startups. In the last week alone, Amazon has introduced a way to incorporate Amazon in-app purchases to games that are published for PCs on Amazon?s games portal; and it has acquired API-based voice recognition service Ivona to compete and one-better Apple?s Siri and Nuance, which powers the iOS voice-recognition service. (Perhaps just by coincidence, one of the case-studies on an early user of the Elatic Transcoder service is the Language Learning Center, which has used it to transcribe ?hundreds of hours of video? for its library.)

Meanwhile, for storage Amazon is well-known as a host for a number of apps and sites ? a situation that had far-reaching consequences when Amazon last year saw outages that affected several much-used apps like Instagram, Pinterest and Netflix.

The second area this touches on is Amazon?s growing business in content delivery, specifically video content. Most consumers will know this primarily through services like Amazon Prime Instant Video (or Lovefilm in the UK), which gives users access to premium video content streamed and on demand to compete against the likes of Netflix.

But through its AWS division, Amazon is also a major host and enabler of other companies? video streaming services (including even Netflix). Video transcoding services like the ones being launched today are relevant both for professional producers but perhaps especially for more independent outfits that are looking for cost-effective solutions for small-scale projects. Amazon offers this service on an a la carte basis, making it particularly easy to use for the latter group, and startups in general. (We first spotted news of the launch on Hacker News, Y-Combinator?s startup-focused news service, although eventually Amazon announced the news, too.)

Amazon says that Elastic Transcoder is a one-stop shop. ?There?s no need to administer software, scale hardware, tune performance, or otherwise manage transcoding infrastructure. You simply create a transcoding ?job? specifying the location of your source video and how you want it transcoded,? it writes on the site. ?Amazon Elastic Transcoder also provides transcoding presets for popular output formats, which means that you don?t need to guess about which settings work best on particular devices. All these features are available via service APIs and the AWS Management Console.?

The move, by default, also enhances and promotes the usefulness of Amazon?s other cloud services. The transcoding jobs is run using the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, also know as Amazon EC2. Amazon also notes that the service is linked up with content stored in Amazon Simple Storage Service (aka Amazon S3). It uses its in-house Simple Notification Service (Amazon SNS) to alert users of the status of their transcoding jobs.

Adebayor focused on scoring goals, not showing off

By TALES AZZONI

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:58 a.m. ET Jan. 28, 2013

RUSTENBURG, South Africa (AP) -Emmanuel Adebayor says he is not worried about making an impression at the African Cup of Nations. He just wants to score goals.

The Togo captain has shrugged off criticism that he has yet to dazzle at the event, saying that his focus is not to show off his skills but to help his team to advance. And so far, it's going to plan.

The Tottenham striker scored his first goal of the tournament in a 2-0 win over Algeria on Saturday, a result that left Togo needing just a draw against Tunisia in their final Group D match on Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals for the first time.

"The most important thing is not to see the great Adebayor, but to see a goal-scoring Adebayor," he said. "My mission is to score goals. If people think that they haven't seen the great Adebayor, so be it. I haven't come here for fame and glory. I came here to win matches."

Adebayor was Togo's biggest threat in the opener against Ivory Coast but missed a few key opportunities to score and help avoid his team's 2-1 loss. One of his unlikely misses came less than three minutes into the match, when he failed to score from close range despite having only the goalkeeper to beat.

He wasn't superb against in the second match at Royal Bafokeng Stadium, but found the net after a breakaway in the 32nd minute, sending a low shot underneath the charging Algerian goalkeeper. A late goal by teammate Dove Wome sealed a crucial victory.

"I'm delighted to have scored my first goal (in the African Cup)," he said. "The first goal is always important and I hope that there will be many more to come."

Adebayor, who was struggling with Tottenham before joining up with Togo, has also shown his leadership off the field, using his status as a top international player to bring attention to the problems involving his national team.

Adebayor was fighting for his teammates' rights even before the African Cup started. He threatened not to play at the tournament because of security concerns and disagreements with Togo's federation over bonus payments for players.

"Someone had to take action and, as the captain, I did it," the striker said. "If the government, the people and everyone else are willing to roll up their sleeves and believe in Togo, we can achieve great things together."

Togolese football has been marred by distractions in recent years. The team had to withdraw from the 2010 African Cup of Nations in Angola after two team officials and a driver were killed, and one player was seriously injured, when gunmen ambushed their bus. Togo did not qualify for last year's event in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

Togo failed to advance past the group stage the previous seven times it played the African Cup.

The fact that it's now one match away from making it happen this time, is thanks in great part to Adebayor.

"I'm here to help Togo win, nothing more," he said. "If you want to see me having fun, then you meet me in May during my holidays. Now I'm all about business."

Businesses plan to boost spending, gauge shows

16 hrs.

A gauge of business investment improved in December, a sign that worries over tighter fiscal policy may not have held back capital spending plans as much as feared at the end of 2012.?

The Commerce Department said on Monday that non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, a closely watched proxy for investment plans, edged up 0.2 percent last month.?

Many economists had expected businesses to be more timid with spending late last year because of uncertainty over government spending cuts and tax increases, which had been scheduled to kick in this month. Congress struck a last-minute deal in early January to avoid or postpone most of the austerity measures.?

Monday's data showed companies were still planning to expand their businesses.?

"There's a lot more confidence," said Wayne Kaufman, an analyst at John Thomas Financial in New York.?

The data pushed down prices for U.S. government debt, while giving the dollar a lift against the yen. But stock prices opened little changed.?

The report showed new orders for overall durable goods - long lasting factory goods from toasters to automobiles - jumped 4.6 percent in December, beating economists expectations of a 1.8 percent gain.?

Gains were broad based, with new orders for machinery, cars and primary metals all increasing. Orders of civilian aircraft, a volatile category, jumped 10.1 percent.?

Economists still think economic growth cooled in the fourth quarter as companies slowed the pace at which they re-stocked their shelves.?

But Monday's report suggested businesses expect demand in the U.S. economy to improve.?

In a further sign firms were betting their business will grow, the investment plans proxy for November was revised higher to show a 3 percent gain.?

"It certainly seems to us that companies are slowly but surely expanding," said Tim Ghriskey, chief investment officer at Solaris Group in Bedford Hills, New York.?

Wall Street executives fret about talent drain

DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - As the titans of Wall Street banks gathered to network, gossip and consider the future of their beleaguered industry in Davos over the past week, one common worry emerged: who is going to take over when we leave?

Some of the most ambitious minds in finance are leaving the industry after years of losses, scandals, bad press - and perhaps most importantly new regulations that have curbed some previously free-wheeling ways.

The issue, executives say, is not pay, but how much scope there is to innovate and build businesses, which is why more bankers and traders are leaving the big Wall Street firms for Silicon Valley, joining private investment partnerships like hedge funds and private equity funds, or going into energy and other industries.

David Boehmer, head of financial services in the Americas for the recruiting firm Heidrick & Struggles, said he hears this message from Wall Street employees looking to leave the industry.

"I get people saying, 'I'm bored and I need to do something about it - this isn't a challenge anymore,'" he said.

The problem is particularly acute for big banks such as Goldman Sachs Group Inc or JPMorgan Chase & Co , several senior bank chief executives, managers and consultants told Reuters in interviews at the World Economic Forum here.

"There is a massive talent drain in our business," said a senior Wall Street executive, who declined to be identified.

BIGGEST CRITICS

For some of Wall Street's harshest critics this is likely to be perceived as good news. Former U.S. Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcker and other experts have argued for years that innovation has little place in the financial sector, and having more conservative bankers and fewer heavy risk takers running Wall Street will reduce the chances of another blow-up like the financial crisis. It will also help to increase wealth generation in more important parts of the economy, such as manufacturing and software, they argue.

The financial implosion in 2008 was partly triggered by the best and the brightest on Wall Street engineering products that helped inflate a massive housing bubble, and then magnified the losses that resulted. The financial sector globally received trillions of dollars of government support during the worst of the crisis, and new regulations are designed to ensure that bailouts are not necessary in the future.

But many of the biggest global banks have gotten only bigger, making them potentially even more dangerous to the financial system. And having talented executives who understand complicated financial products and know how to control risks will become even more important, executives say.

"It will become more of a problem five or 10 years down the road, but ultimately someone is going to have to manage these beasts," the Wall Street executive said.

It isn't difficult to find examples of the exodus from big banks.

After nearly 15 years in finance - with stints at American International Group Inc , Barclays Capital and PineBridge Investments - Jacques-Philippe Piverger left Wall Street in 2011 to launch a company called Micro Power Design Inc, which makes solar-powered lamps. Piverger's ultimate goal is to get the devices into the hands of poor people in developing countries whose access to electricity is limited.

"Isn't it cool?" he asked as one of the lamps was placed on the bar of the posh Belvedere Hotel in Davos.

Piverger was well-paid in finance but said his career had left him wanting. His startup gives him the ability to "address business and societal and environmental imperatives from under one roof," he said.

Another example is the Twitter-linked tech startup Dataminr, which is staffed by ex-employees from Wall Street firms, including Mark Dimont, who left Morgan Stanley last year to head a business development team there.

Of course, there have been previous waves of departures to hedge funds as bankers and traders have sought to strike out on their own - or to make more money - but this time the departures appear to be broader in nature.

TOLERATING ODDBALLS

The departure of employees may force Wall Street to consider a wider range of people for positions. Heidrick & Struggles' Boehmer gave a presentation to a group of young professionals in Davos about his biggest challenge recruiting for big banks these days: getting executives to think creatively when filling positions.

In the presentation - called "Hiring an oddball" - Boehmer described how hard it is to get bank executives to hire creative and "quirky" leaders who do not "fit in" with the prototypical suited-up Wall Street mould, but who could help revolutionize the industry.

Instead, those quirky types are sought by Silicon Valley, and they may be happier there. Many prefer the laid back atmosphere, not to mention the challenges of building a business, and the promise of lucrative rewards at companies like Google , Facebook and smaller startups, Boehmer said.

"Banks are not getting top-level talent out of universities anymore, so in 10 to 15 years, there could be a big problem when it comes to leadership at the senior level of these firms," Boehmer said. "They're seeing big gaps in talent."

Boehmer said he performed a search for a technology position at a major investment bank, calling on candidates from Silicon Valley who might be lured to New York with mega-paychecks. He was denied by everyone he approached, he said.

On the flip side, Heidrick & Struggles also did a search for a mobile-payments company on the West Coast that was looking for someone with financial expertise but offered just one-quarter of the pay. In that case, "we got tons of applicants," said Boehmer.

Jack Dunn, president and CEO of FTI Consulting, recalled a recent conversation with a friend's son who is about 35 years old and works at a major Wall Street bank.

Despite having a lucrative pay package and senior title, all the son talked about was finding an exit strategy, Dunn said.

"When I was young and didn't know any better, I would have thought it was a dream job," said Dunn, a former investment banker. "It's a problem because we're going to need someone to pick up the pieces, and a lot of the best people are leaving these firms."

(This story corrects the spelling of Boehmer's name throughout)

Leaked HTC M7 parts show off the sleek design of HTC?s next flagship phone [video]

HTC M7 CaseHTC M7

HTC (2498) is banking heavily that its upcoming M7 smartphone will outsell its other recent releases and revive a company that has struggled to stand out in a crowded Android market. But how, exactly, does HTC plan on distinguishing the M7 from earlier models? In a new video from ETrade Supply showing off leaked M7 parts, we learn that HTC has decided to make the M7?s case flatter than the curved casings of its HTC One phones, while also adding a button on the side of the device that?s solely dedicated to opening the camera and snapping pictures. The casing is also slightly longer than other One series phones and has slightly sharper corners and straighter edges, thus giving the M7 more of a standard rectangle shape that?s similar to the HTC DROID DNA that it released last year. The full video showing off the leaked M7 case is posted below.

Egypt: opposition rejects president's dialogue

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's main opposition coalition has rejected the Islamist president's call for dialogue to resolve the country's political crisis, unless their conditions are met.

Monday's announcement was made by reform leader Mohammed ElBaradei and other top figures in the National Salvation Front.

ElBaradei said President Mohammed Morsi must first appoint a national unity government and name a commission to amend the disputed constitution ratified last month.

"The dialogue to which the president invited us is to do with form and not content," said ElBaradei, Nobel Peace laureate. "We support any dialogue if it has a clear agenda that can shepherd the nation to the shores of safety."

The opposition's stand is likely to fuel the political crisis roiling the nation and in which more than 50 people have died.

Lawmakers see immigration overhaul this year

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican and Democratic lawmakers were cautiously optimistic Sunday that a long-sought overhaul of the nation's immigration system that includes a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants currently in the country will clear Congress this year, the result of changes in the political landscape shown in November's election.

"We are trying to work our way through some very difficult issues," said Illinois' Sen. Richard Durbin, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate. "But, we are committed to a comprehensive approach to finally, in this country, have an immigration law we can live with. We have virtually been going maybe 25 years without a clear statement about immigration policy. That's unacceptable in this nation of immigrants."

Sen. Robert Menendez, who along with Durbin and Sen. John McCain, is part of the six-member, bipartisan Senate group working on a framework for immigration legislation to be announced this week, said current politics dictate that a pathway for citizenship must be included.

"Let's be very clear: having a pathway to earned legalization is an essential element. And I think that we are largely moving in that direction as an agreement," said Menendez, D-N.J.

But the package "will have the enhancement of the border security," he said, nodding to Republicans' priority to tighten borders to prevent future illegal immigration.

He also said the package would have to crack down on employers hiring undocumented workers.

Arizona Republican McCain has returned to the issue after having led a failed push to fix the nation's broken immigration system ahead of his 2008 bid for the White House.

McCain said: "What's changed is, honestly, is that there is a new, I think, appreciation on both sides of the aisle ? including, maybe more importantly on the Republican side of the aisle, that we have to enact a comprehensive immigration reform bill."

Despite making little progress on immigration in his first term, President Barack Obama won more than 70 percent of the Latino vote, in part because of the conservative positions on immigration that Republican nominee Mitt Romney staked out during the GOP primary. Asians, who immigrated to the U.S. in higher numbers than Hispanics in 2010, also overwhelmingly backed Obama. Latino voters accounted for 10 percent of the electorate in November.

Obama is to press his case for immigration changes during a trip to Las Vegas Tuesday: a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants that includes paying fines and back taxes; increased border security; mandatory penalties for businesses that employ unauthorized immigrants; and improvements to the legal immigration system, including giving green cards to high-skilled workers and lifting caps on legal immigration for the immediate family members of U.S. citizens.

In an opinion piece published online Sunday in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Sen. Marco Rubio, also a member of the bipartisan Senate group, laid out his proposal to address the issue. The Florida Republican, son of Cuban immigrants, wrote that "significant progress" on enforcing immigration laws must be certified before unauthorized immigrants now in the country are allowed to apply for residency and "get in the back of the line."

Rep. Paul Ryan, the 2012 Republican candidate for vice president, said he backs Rubio's proposal.

"Immigration is a good thing. We're here because of immigration. We need to make sure it works," Wisconsin's Ryan said.

If Republicans fail to act, they will pay the price in elections for generations, McCain warned.

"Well, I'll give you a little straight talk: Look at the last election... We are losing dramatically the Hispanic vote, which we think should be ours for a variety of reasons," McCain said.

McCain and Menendez spoke with ABC's "This Week," Durbin appeared on "Fox News Sunday" and Ryan was on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Geek Speak: SolarWinds IT Blog Spotlight with G... | thwack

Crump.jpg

George Crump is President and Founder of Storage Switzerland, an IT analyst firm focused on the storage and virtualization segments that has grown to employ six full-time writers. George has been in the IT game since 1985, where he started out working on Xenix systems for Tandy. This eventually led to gigs with Novell and Legato. Before founding Storage Switzerland, he was CTO at one the nation?s largest storage integrators where he was in charge of technology testing, integration and product selection. Having reached the pinnacle of what he wanted to accomplish in that role, he sought out ways he could leverage his expertise as a consultant and analyst of the storage industry.

?

He started his blogging career by writing articles for Information Week which eventually led to writing articles for and about companies in the market and their products. Thus Storage Switzerland was born and now averages about 700,000 page views per month. When asked how he came up with the name Storage Switzerland, he replies ?When I was CTO at my old firm, we would design whatever storage systems were necessary without being tied to one company?s product line. I would tell end users that ?We are like Switzerland, we don?t really follow any corporate agenda.??

?

His number one goal in writing his blog is to educate on concepts and processes. He finds that the most well received articles are the ?What Is?? or ?How-To?? type of post. Specifically, he really enjoys writing about SSD and Flash and how storage is managed (or complicated) by the advent of virtualized environments. He has been surprised that some of the most popular posts lately have been about tape drives, what most in the industry would consider to be a dying technology. He theorizes the popularity is driven by a whole new generation of IT managers coming into the field who have never learned about tape, but are now forced to learn how to manage the legacy systems that are already in place.

?

When asked about what he says are the future trends in the industry, he believes that the IT infrastructure is nearing a time of convergence where data, applications, and storage will all be managed under a single virtualized software stack. This may lead to easier monitoring as these systems converge, but it will still require an experienced IT manager to provision, tune, and manage these systems.

?

George is also a regular contributor to publications such as Byte and Switch, SearchStorage, eWeek, SearchServerVirtualizaiton and SearchDataBackup. When not writing or researching the storage industry, George can be found training for the four or five ? Ironman Races he participates in every year.

How to find your niche | Webdesigner Depot

Are you trying to grow your freelance web development or design business? Do you want to spend more time designing websites and less time trying to figure out what the client really wants and needs?

By finding the right web design niche, you can increase productivity and revenue and make your freelance business more profitable.

Web design is a competitive industry, but there are excellent opportunities for those with clear goals. A Google search on ?freelance web developer United States? yielded over 51 million results, yet the US Department of Labor?s Occupational Outlook Handbook reports that IT jobs for web developers, information security analysts and computer network architects are expected to grow by 22% between 2010 and 2020. According to the website, ?Employment of web developers is expected to grow as e-commerce continues to grow. Online purchasing is expected to continue to grow faster than the overall retail industry. As retail firms expand their online offerings, demand for web developers will increase?.

While the study focuses on jobs within IT businesses, the potential for freelance work is also clear. Freelancers just need to learn how to market and run their business. One way to improve your freelance business is to specialize in one or two niches. Choose a profitable niche and you?ll reap the rewards.

?

Advantages of niche working

Instead of generalizing in many areas, niche web designers can focus their time and energy on narrower areas. You could become an expert on the needs and challenges of one group of clients very quickly, instead of learning little bits about many different businesses, regions or website styles.

Focus on trends in one or two industries

Focusing on a niche market will help you better serve clients in that particular industry. Your productivity and efficiency will improve as well because you won?t be spending as much time figuring out the needs of varied clients. Instead, you?ll work with a smaller group of clients with similar requirements.?

Time to develop specialized services

With a narrowed focus, you?ll be better equipped to meet your clients? web design needs. You?ll be more familiar with new developments and common concerns affecting your target market. By being able to discuss the latest techniques of teeth whitening with dentists or by presenting the evolving demands of tech-savvy real estate customers to realtors, you?ll show prospective clients that you can meet the particular challenges of their businesses.

Narrow your focus to researching and developing new products and services for your niche clients. Ask yourself, ?What product or service could I create that fills a particular need for this target market??

Establish yourself as an expert

Establishing your reputation as an expert in one area of web design or development is easier than establishing yourself as an overall expert in design because there is just too much competition. Clients will have confidence in you if they know that you are a specialist rather than a generalist and that you are familiar with their unique concerns.

?

Client benefits

Why would a company want to work with a specialist rather than a generalist?

If your web design business was going through an income tax audit, would you rather have the assistance of a general accounting firm or one that specializes in taxes for web designers? A generalist could do the job, but a specialist has more detailed knowledge of your situation.

Having a niche designer means potentially less work for the customer. The client will have fewer revisions to make due to incorrect information or terminology used by the designer in the mockup. They will benefit from your industry-specific services and your knowledge of the language and issues of their business.

?

Choose an interesting, profitable niche

Find a profitable niche based on your interests, experience and abilities. While you will need to generate enough income to support yourself, money isn?t everything. Don?t work exclusively with one group if you know you will be bored by the work. Either avoid it completely, or include one or two other niches that you?re passionate about or find enjoyable.

Industry niches

Focusing on a single industry or field is one of the simplest ways to specialize. You could quickly get tagged with an awesome nickname??the wedding planner web design guy,? ?the personal injury lawyer web design gal??which you could incorporate into your marketing and SEO strategies.

Organizations and groups

Creating websites for organizations and groups will quickly generate word-of-mouth referrals and help build your niche business. Sports leagues, service groups, business organizations, religious groups and non-profit or fundraising organizations are examples of groups that need websites. However, think carefully about the financial opportunities before deciding to work with a particular group. Some organizations, such as business-networking services, are more profitable than others?although volunteering your services for a charity website is a worthwhile endeavour and a good way to showcase your skills and add to your portfolio.

Regional and local web development

Despite the global scale of the Internet, some customers prefer dealing with local businesses and having face-to-face meetings. Discover local business opportunities by looking around your area to see how many organizations need websites.

Businesses are finding a web presence to be increasingly important in attracting customers. Depending on the population and activities in your area, you might be able to concentrate on web design services in your city, region or state. You could fill a niche by focusing on just one industry in your region.

Website style

Do you enjoy creating e-commerce sites, or do you prefer setting up informational websites? Maybe you only want to work with WordPress. Promoting yourself as a web designer who provides very particular website styles to a range of businesses is another way to find a niche.

Renos, upgrades and speciality services

In the construction world, there are renovation businesses that will fix problems that the initial contractors left behind. Web developers and designers could do the same thing. Find a niche in web design renovations or upgrades, perhaps for a certain industry, region or type of service. For example, you could upgrade websites to be mobile-friendly or to better engage users.

?

Still can?t think of a niche?

Turn to the media. Look at the headlines in the business section of the newspaper or on a news website. Which businesses are expanding and getting funding these days? Also, look at your previous clients. Which ones did you really enjoy working with, and which ones are busy and growing?

?

Niche-picking pitfalls

As you consider different areas to focus on, avoid niches that are too small, that you don?t like, or that don?t pay.

Choosing a niche that is too small could result in an unsustainable business. While you might be passionate about creating websites for fans of 17th-century German literature, you?ll likely earn more by making websites for clients with bigger marketing budgets. Traditional fields such as medicine, law, accounting, dentistry, financial services and healthcare all might be lucrative niches for freelance web designers. But before committing yourself, make sure you are willing to invest time and energy in learning about that particular subject and figuring out whether you?ll enjoy interacting with the people who you?ll be working with and for.?

?

To niche or not to niche

Not all freelance web designers are sold on the idea of working in a niche. In fact, you might cringe at the thought of turning away clients who don?t fit in your niche. But remember: while large web development firms have the resources to profitably serve a wide variety of clients, a freelancer doesn?t.?

If you?re still on the fence, see how many hours you spend gathering information and preparing work for your clients. If you charge by the project, figure out how much money you would save if you already had this information from previous projects. For example, if you have to spend four hours researching, at $75 an hour, that?s $300 in lost revenue, because you could have spent those four hours working on other projects.

?

Have you selected a niche to work within? Do you prefer to act as a Jack-of-all-trades? Let us know in the comments.

Peace Agreement for Eastern DRC in Works

Al Jazeera reported on Friday that a peace agreement was being finalized in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. However, the announcement came a day after the United Nations Security Council had given permission to peacekeepers to use drones for monitoring purposes, according to Reuters .

Additionally, the humanitarian group Doctors Without Borders issued a warning on Friday that thousands of displaced citizens in southeastern DRC were at risk as they are being confused for combatants during conflict between the Congolese military and militia active in Katanga province.

Here's the latest information regarding the conflicts taking place in rural DRC.

U.N. peace plan to be signed Monday

The agreement is hoped to end insecurity in the east, a region that has been the source of rebellions and government overthrows since the country's independence.

However, there were concerns that the agreement is too short and doesn't include important specifics like how to wind down the rebel group M23.

A special envoy to the great lakes region, an area including neighboring Rwanda, Uganda, and Burundi, would be used to implement the agreement.

Drones approved by U.N.

The 15-member Security Council approved aerial spy equipment use in eastern Congo after initial concerns voiced by Russia, China, and Rwanda.

The drones will be used for situational monitoring of the nine-month-old conflict in the region. Rwanda had opposed the use of drones, voicing concern that Africa would be used as a laboratory for intelligence gathering devices. Rwanda has been accused of backing the M23 rebel group, as noted by Al Jazeera, an accusation the country denies.

The U.N. has wanted surveillance drones to operate in the area since 2008.

Militia groups preventing movement of refugees

Doctors Without Borders indicated that Mai-Mai militia in Katanga, another large, mostly rural province in the southeast DRC, were putting civilians at risk in the region.

Christine Slagt, MSF project coordinator in Shamwana, DRC, warned that with thousands of displaced people on the move, they run the risk of being considered combatants and are unable to access treatment for malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, malnutrition, and other health care provided by the group.

In a statement, Slagt noted the group was "particularly concerned about the very vulnerable hiding in the bush who cannot access medical care. Severe malaria can be fatal in children if left untreated and pregnant women with complications during labor are in a life-threatening predicament."

Safaricom announces the Yolo, Africa's first Intel-powered smartphone

DNP Safaricom announces the Yolo, Africa's first Intelpowered smartphone

Intel is finally opening its wings and spreading its mobile influence to Africa, as Kenya's Safaricom has officially introduced the Yolo phone. The device, which will be the very first Intel-powered smartphone on the continent, will be priced at Kshs 10,999 ($126) and bundled with 500MB of data. The handset supports HSPA+ network connectivity and packs a Z2420 Atom processor that reaches speeds of up to 1.2GHz. If that CPU sounds familiar, it should, because it's the same "Lexington" chip that we sampled a few weeks back at CES. As for the rest of the Yolo's specs, you'll be looking at Android 4.0 on a 3.5-inch display and snapping pictures with a 5-megapixel shooter capable of recording 1080p HD video. Not looking to compete with top-shelf handsets, Safaricom hopes to catch the eye of frugal first-time buyers with this budget-friendly device. If you fit the bill, you may want to check out the Yolo as soon as possible -- after all, your phone only lives once.

Safaricom, Intel Introduce Yolo[TM], Africa's First Smartphone with Intel Inside

Nairobi, Kenya, 24th January 2013 -- Leading integrated communications provider Safaricom Limited today announced the Yolo[TM] smartphone, the first smartphone for Africa with Intel Inside(R).

The device is aimed at the growing number of cost-conscious and first-time buyers in Kenya who do not want to sacrifice device performance or user experience for cost. The Yolo smartphone will be sold in Safaricom shops countrywide at the entry price of Kshs. 10,999 and comes bundled with free 500 MB data.

The phone is based on Intel's latest smartphone platform for emerging markets, launched earlier this month at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES). With Intel Inside, users of the Yolo smartphone are assured of fast Web browsing, impressive multimedia capabilities and a great Android* applications experience.

"We're redefining what cost-conscious Kenyans can expect from a smartphone," said Peter Arina, general manager, Safaricom' s Consumer Business Unit. "The Intel-based Yolo smartphone strikes a unique balance between price and performance - we consider it to be a real breakthrough. It's great news that Kenya will be the launch country in Africa for smartphones with Intel Inside and we expect a great reception from our customers."

"We are delighted to partner with Safaricom in bringing the first smartphone with Intel Inside to Kenyan consumers" said Aysegul Ildeniz, Regional Director for the Middle East, Turkey and Africa Region. "The new handset extends the benefits of Intel technology to more smartphone users around the world and we believe that Kenyan consumers will welcome the increased functionality and overall value of the device. We look forward to our continued cooperation with Safaricom."

The Yolo[TM] smartphone is based on the Intel Smartphone Reference Design for the value segment of the smartphone market. The device is powered by the Intel(R) Atom[TM] processor Z2420 with Intel Hyper-Threading Technology that can achieve speeds of up to 1.2 GHz. The efficiency of this technology package helps to enable a smooth and responsive user experience, which includes support for 1080p HD video capture, and a camera with advanced imaging capabilities, including burst mode that allows people to capture seven pictures in a second in 5-megapixel quality.

The device is housed in a compact design and features a 3.5-inch touchscreen display for crisp text and images, support for FM radio and an expandable memory slot for greater flexibility, and HSPA+ modem support with Intel's XMM 6265 modem for global roaming. The handset can also be enabled with McAfee mobile security software, providing consumers with added protection as well as data backup and restore capabilities when needed1.
