OCD and Homeschooling | Psych Central

OCD and HomeschoolingAfter reading many of John Holt?s books in college and subsequently working with him in Boston, I became committed to the homeschooling movement. This was in the mid-?70s, way before homeschooling became an acceptable alternative to traditional schooling.

When my three children were young, we homeschooled off and on throughout the elementary school years. My son Dan, in particular, loved the freedom of being able to explore his interests as he pleased. He continued homeschooling throughout high school, and received his diploma from a nontraditional school that works with homeschoolers. Always bright and self-motivated, he was truly born to homeschool. He has since graduated college.

His diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder didn?t come until after he graduated high school, and while he had known something was wrong for ?a while,? his father and I didn?t have a clue. So the decision to homeschool, on our part, had nothing to do with the fact that Dan has OCD. From Dan?s point of view, it was how he learned best. He did give high school a try for a few months in ninth grade, but decided to leave so he could ?continue his education.? Whether his OCD played a part in that decision or not, I don?t really know. But I do know that Dan genuinely loves learning, and he and homeschooling were a great fit.

Over the years, I?ve noticed, mostly from talking with people and reading blogs, that a considerable number of children with OCD are homeschooling. This is a totally unscientific observation; I don?t have any statistics. But I do have a question: Why? No doubt everyone has their own reasons, but some possible explanations might include:

  • OCD often is associated with above-average intelligence, as well as creativity, and these two attributes do not always mesh well with traditional schooling.
  • The school is unable or unwilling to meet the child?s special needs (even though they are legally bound to do so).
  • The child refuses to attend school. This might be directly related to the OCD (for example, he or she may believe the school is contaminated), or indirectly related (the child is being bullied because of his or her odd behaviors).
  • The child is willing to attend school but parents feel it is advantageous (in reference to OCD) to keep the child home.
  • The parents or child believe homeschooling is the best way for this particular child to learn (independent of any issues with OCD).

I believe in homeschooling. While I know it?s not for everyone, it can be a rewarding experience for parents and children who undertake it for the right reasons.

But if your child has left school or has never attended solely because he or she has obsessive-compulsive disorder, it may be a good idea to reevaluate the situation. It?s true that school might be a fervent breeding ground for OCD triggers, but is avoiding it the right thing to do?

To complicate matters more, for those also dealing with social anxiety and perfectionism, school can be torturous. I know it?s easy to say ?avoidance is never the answer,? but when you have a child who is terrified of going to school, what do you do? Sometimes, could it be that avoiding certain situations is the right thing to do?

As with everything related to OCD, there are no easy answers. Parents, therapists, teachers, and students all need to become as educated as possible about the disorder. If it?s decided the child will attend school, the appropriate support network should be put in place. Of course, a support system is also necessary if the child is homeschooling.

Either way, the child must receive proper treatment. Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) Therapy, the frontline treatment for OCD, is actually based on facing one?s fears, and is therefore the opposite of avoidance. So the actual location of the battleground (school or home) isn?t so important. What matters is that the war against OCD is faced head-on.

Janet Singer?s son Dan suffered from OCD so severe that he could not even eat. After navigating through a disorienting maze of treatments and programs, Dan made a triumphant recovery. Janet has become an advocate for OCD awareness and wants everyone to know that OCD, no matter how severe, is treatable. There is so much hope for those with this disorder.

Janet has been published on various mental health sites, and also has her own blog (www.ocdtalk.wordpress.com) where she shares Dan?s story and talks about anything related to OCD. She is married with three children and lives in southwest Florida.

DC sniper says he was sexually abused by accomplice

NEW YORK (Reuters) - D.C. sniper Lee Boyd Malvo claims he was sexually abused by John Allen Muhammad, his older accomplice in a 2002 killing spree that terrorized the Washington, D.C., area, according to NBC News.

"For the entire period when I was almost 15 until I got arrested, I was sexually abused by John Muhammad," Malvo said in a prison interview broadcast on NBC's "Today" show on Thursday.

"I felt a sense of shame, and I just said, ?That's just something I'd never tell anyone,'" Malvo said. "And to a certain extent, up to that point, I really couldn't handle it."

Ten people were killed and three more wounded during a series of sniper attacks in which Malvo and Muhammad fired on victims from inside a blue Chevrolet Caprice.

They were arrested in October, 2002 after police discovered the pair sleeping in the car at a rest stop in Maryland.

Both men were convicted of the killings in 2003. Malvo was sentenced to life in prison, and Muhammad was sentenced to death. He was executed by lethal injection in 2009.

Malvo said he had confessed to Muhammad that he had been sexually abused as a child by a babysitter and relatives, and said he allowed Muhammad to abuse him because he sought the older man's approval.

"I couldn't say no," Malvo said. "I had wanted that level of love and acceptance and consistency for all of my life, and couldn't find it. And even if unconsciously, or even in moments of short reflection, I knew that it was wrong, I did not have the willpower to say no."

Malvo also claimed in the interview that there are more victims of the pair's killing spree who have not been identified, and he contacted the families of five of them. NBC said law enforcement officials declined to comment on his claim of additional victims.

Judge: Sony didn't promise "perfect security," isn't liable for PSN hack

A California district judge dismissed most of a class-action complaint against Sony's handling of the massive PlayStation Network (PSN) data breach last year. However,?plaintiffs will be able to amend and resubmit parts of the complaint in the near future.

The lawsuit, first filed last June, takes Sony to task for failing to protect users' information using industry standard practices, which exposed those users to undue risk of identity theft and fraud. Though the core PSN service is free, the lawsuit also sought restitution for lost access to paid services such as Netflix, MLB.tv, and NHL Gamecenter, which were unavailable through the PS3 while PSN was down for over a month following the hacking incident.

But district judge Anthony J. Battaglia's ruling [PDF via courthouse News] rejected most of the plaintiffs' arguments, saying, in essence, that Sony never promised their service would be perfect. In fact, the ruling specifically cites a clause in PSN's privacy policy warning users that "there is no such thing as perfect security" and "we cannot ensure or warrant the security of any information transmitted to us through [the PSN]," obviating the suit's claim that Sony misled consumers or committed fraud itself.

Judge Battaglia also notes that Sony's terms of service clearly state that "no warranty is given about the quality, functionality, availability, or performance of Sony Online Services, or any content or service offered on or through Sony Online Services." Thus, the company was under no obligation to provide "continuous and uninterrupted service to either the PSN or prepaid third-party services." Furthermore, the plaintiffs were unable to prove any specific harm of identity theft or personal fraud stemming directly from the data breach.

While the plaintiffs will have until November 9 to amend a number of their complaints, the ruling effectively guts the most salient arguments against Sony in the matter. Ultimately, this should protect the company from any further damages from the hacking incident.

Google cameras map popular Grand Canyon trails

6 hrs.

Google and its street-view cameras already have taken users to narrow cobblestone alleys in Spain using a tricycle, inside?the Smithsonian with a push?cart and to British Columbia's snow-covered slopes by snowmobile.

The search giant now has brought its all-seeing eyes ? mounted for the first time on a backpack ? down into the Grand Canyon, showcasing the attraction's most popular hiking trails on the South Rim and other walkways.

It's the latest evolution in mapping technology for the Mountain View, Calif., company, which has used a rosette of cameras to photograph thousands of cities and towns in dozens of countries for its Street View feature. With a click of the mouse, Internet users are transported virtually for a 360-degree view of locales they may have read about only in tourist books and seen in flat, 2-D images.

"Any of these sort of iconic, cultural, historical locations that are not accessible by road is where we want to go," said Ryan Falor, product manager at Google.

Google announced the trekker earlier this year but made its first official collection of data this week at the Grand Canyon.

The backpacks aren't ready for volunteer use, but Google has said it wants to deploy them at national forests, to the narrow streets of Venice, Mount Everest and to ancient ruins and castles.

The move to capture the Grand Canyon comes after Apple chose to drop Google Maps from its mobile operating systems and opted to use its own mapping program that was derided for, among other things, poor directions and missing towns.

Steve Silverman, operations manager for Google didn't directly address the competition in saying: "Just trying to document a trail, it's going to be hard to beat this."

Google launched its Street View feature in 2007 and has expanded from five U.S. cities to more than 3,000 in 43 countries. Google teams and volunteers have covered more than 5 million miles with the Street View vehicles on a scale that other companies haven't approached, said Mike Dobson, president of Telemapics, a company that monitors mapping efforts.

"You could safely say that it's a standout, well-used application and they don't really have any competition," he said.

As the sun rose Monday, Luc Vincent, Google engineering director, strapped on one of the 40-pound backpacks and set down the Bright Angel Trail to the Colorado River ? a nearly 10-mile hike that goes from 6,900 feet in elevation to 2,400 feet. He hiked back up from Phantom Ranch, which can be 30 degrees warmer than at the rim, through the South Kaibab Trail and also gathered data on other trails.

The so-called trekker captures images every 2.5 seconds with 15 cameras that are 5 megapixels each from the rest areas, the steep switchbacks, the change from juniper trees to scrub brush and the traffic that moves aside as a courtesy to mule riders.

The GPS data is limited, so Google must compensate with sensors that record temperature, vibrations and the orientation of the device as it changes, before it?stitches?the images together and makes them available to users in a few months, Falor said.

Hikers that were on the trail when the data was gathered will have their faces blurred ? an attempt by Google to ensure privacy. Street View has run into problems in places like Europe and Australia for scooping up information transmitted over unsecured wireless networks.

A removable hard drive on the trekker stores the data gathered at the Grand Canyon. Tourists looked at the trekker strangely this week, as if it was something from outer space.

Sharon Kerfoot, a first-time visitor from Alberta said being able to view the terrain ahead of time, gauge the difficulty of the hike and know just how wide the path is would benefit those considering a trip to the Grand Canyon. She and a group of friends headed down the same path as Vincent but on mules, not foot.

"I think it's an excellent idea to give people a broader perspective on what they're getting into," she said.

What the images won't tell visitors is how much water they should carry down the trails, how to prepare for temperature changes, what type of food to bring and how much, and how best to protect the natural resources, park spokeswoman Maureen Oltrogge said.

"Stitched together with other information out there, the technology could be valuable," she said.

Romney's troops are stuck in the minefield of North Carolina, but Obama's bunkers remain unbreached

All Quiet on the Eastern Coast

All Quiet on the Western Coast

Good news for Mitt Romney. He has the key swing state of North Carolina in the bag. At least that?s what Republicans are saying, announcing earlier in the week that they were pulling out senior members of their campaign team to deploy them to areas where the US presidential race remains ? according to clich? ? too close to call. Their claim was also given weight on the eve of the Monday?s final presidential debate by Paul Begala, a key Obama supporter, and former adviser to Bill Clinton. Asked by CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer if he thought Obama?s campaign had given up on the state, Begala replied, ?Yes. I am not supposed to say that, Wolf, but I work for, as you mentioned, the pro-Obama super PAC, and I am being paid to help re-elect the president. But if you look at where he is going and where he is spending money ? yes, it looks like Governor Romney is likely to carry North Carolina.?

But is the capture of North Carolina really the triumph the Republicans are touting? For one, it?s not entirely clear they?ve captured it at all. The Obama campaign insist they have no intention of withdrawing from the state, and point to early voting returns which show them outperforming their efforts in 2008, when they won by a minuscule 0.32 per cent. Admittedly the polls tell a different story, with the current RCP average showing Romney ahead by a healthy 5.6 per cent.

Even if North Carolina has finally fallen into Romney?s hands, though, it doesn?t warrant the positive gloss his team are putting on their ?victory?. Far from it.

To understand the real significance of North Carolina, you need to understand Barack Obama?s strategy for defending his presidency. Essentially, Obama is using the states he won on 2008 as a political Maginot Line.

His campaign is built on the principle of strength in depth. Two or three states represent the outer ring; the barbed wire, and landmines. Next come the second-tier states; his machine gun nests. And finally the states that form the last line of defence, his supposedly indestructible bunkers. To win, Mitt Romney has to penetrate those bunkers, and neutralise them.

North Carolina was all mines and barbed wire. As the state Obama secured by the smallest margin, it was one of the first of the obstacles Romney had to overcome ? along with Indiana, which Obama sneaked into his column by just over 1 per cent. Indiana fell very early in the campaign, effectively as soon as Romney was nominated, and North Carolina was predicted to follow in short order. ?I think what you are beginning to see is they [the Obama campaign] are beginning to make a tactical withdrawal from the state,? Romney?s political director Rich Beeson confidently told journalists. Unfortunately, that statement was issued at the start of September. It?s taken the Romney campaign six additional, and precious, weeks to clear the North Carolina landmines from the path of their advance, and they?re still not out of the minefield yet.

Only now is Mitt Romney is managing to cut through the first line of Obama?s defences, and there are only 13 days of the campaign to go. Indeed, across the country millions of early votes have already been cast.

Obama?s second line of defence is represented by the states of Virginia, New Hampshire, Florida and Colorado. Here, Romney has only managed a limited penetration. Florida appears to be tilting his way, but remains competitive, and once again the early returns are looking good for Obama. Both Colorado and Virginia remain tied, but in Colorado the early voting is also looking positive for the President, and Obama has the additional advantage of the state?s Latino community, which a number of analysts believe is being significantly under-polled. Finally, there is New Hampshire, where Obama still enjoys a narrow lead.

If Romney?s weary army does manage to finally break through this second ring of steel, they are then going to find themselves confronted by one final imposing obstacle; the cold, unyielding edifice of the Obama firewall states. These are Ohio (Divisional HQ), Wisconsin, Nevada and Iowa. Obama continues to lead, and has always led, in every one. Romney has subjected them to a sustained long-range bombardment, but the heavily fortified bunkers remain largely unscathed. Over the past week Obama?s lead in these states has remained steady, and again, as the early votes are counted, all the evidence is of the defenders' strength growing, rather than weakening.

Mitt Romney?s battered standard may well be flying above North Carolina come November 6th. But if it does, it will be a victory that has cost him lot of blood and treasure. The great Republican general may be winning the odd battle. But he is still losing the war.

Writer Hunting for Viewers with MTV's Teen Wolf - VFS Blog

Teen Wolf?has been something of a breakout hit since debuting on MTV in the summer of 2011. Based on the 1985 film, the show premiered to good critical response and steadily growing ratings, capturing a key female demographic for the network. Season two ran this past summer, and season three is already on the horizon for 2013.

Film Production?alum?Angela Harvey?isn?t the first alum of the program to begin a writing career but she?s one of the latest. Although screenwriting isn?t one of the key disciplines in the VFS Film curriculum, storytelling and script development are still big parts of what makes the program tick.

Angela, whose affinity for the craft goes back years, has been on Teen Wolf?since nearly the beginning, first as an assistant and now, for season three, as a staff writer. She was the writer assigned to the Teen Wolf: The Hunt, a game that ran on Facebook throughout season two. The response to the interactive ?two-screen? component was huge. Consider this:?An MTV rep told Mashable this summer that ?the success of the game, along with the show?s ratings, has ?definitely played a role? in Teen Wolf getting renewed for a third season.?

We caught up with Angela, now based in LA and a staff writer on the show, to hear more about her path to Teen Wolf and, especially, her role in shaping The Hunt.

Hi, Angela! Tell us the story of how you came to be working on Teen Wolf. You?ve been on the show since season one, right?

Angela:?I got on the show when season one was in prep. It was pretty random, actually. After VFS, I moved back to Atlanta, where there is fortunately a lot of production happening. After a while, I landed a job as an office PA on the action-comedy Killers. I became good friends with the production secretary on that movie and we stayed in touch after wrap.

Several months later, she called me to see if I wanted to take over her job as assistant to a producer at Tyler Perry Studios. I interviewed with that producer and got the job. While we were wrapping up the Tyler Perry movie, [the producer] was also gearing up to produce the first season of Teen Wolf. I continued with him as his assistant for seasons one and two of Teen Wolf before getting promoted to staff writer in season three. I was also writers? assistant for season two.

When we last spoke, you said that one of the things you liked about screenwriting was that ?writing is the foundation on which everything else is built.? And TV is definitely a writer?s medium. Did you imagine yourself working in TV or did it just work out that way?

Angela:?Looking back on the path that brought me here, I could say that I just ended up in television, but it doesn?t feel that way. Once I realized that writing for television was what I wanted, I went after it with all I had. Before I started working on Teen Wolf, I?d actually put writing itself on the back burner in terms of career options. I?ve always loved writing and I was still writing my own movie scripts with a mind to produce them. But somehow in my mind, it seemed more practical to pursue a career in producing than in writing. When I started working closely with a very talented and successful producer, I began to realize that I didn?t love the work of practical producing enough to throw myself into it whole-heartedly. What I really loved was writing and creative producing, and I needed to go for that.

It was during season one of Teen Wolf that I really started to understand the benefits of working in television. In television, the story can go into a much deeper level of nuance and detail than in film. The characters get a lot more time to grow and develop ? or devolve ? as necessary. And viewers really get a chance to enter the world that?s been created for them.

Before Teen Wolf, I knew in theory that television was a writer?s medium, but it wasn?t until I saw it unfold before me in real life that I truly got that. I learned a lot of it from watching Teen Wolf showrunner Jeff Davis. He?s an amazing visionary. And watching him guide his vision to life was incredible. Of course production is always a collaborative effort. But at the end of the day, a symphony is only as good as the conductor.

The Hunt was a huge success and part of that seems to be the integration, that it?s not just pop-up video style trivia or behind-the-scenes content. It doesn?t feel tacked on. It feels like it?s part of the world of the show. What went into creating that integration?

Angela:?I?m particularly proud of The Hunt! The concept itself was pretty groundbreaking. We were in the thick of production on season two when the network and Social Samba presented the idea to the show team.

Essentially, Teen Wolf: The Hunt is an app that?s run through Facebook. The viewers who want to participate log in through Facebook and then go into simulated instant message sessions where they interact with characters from the show. The concept was so new at the time, no one really had a clear definition or explanation for what the experience actually was. We left that initial meeting thinking of it as a game that viewers could play to enhance the content of the show.

Because the showrunner and the head writer were totally swamped with production by the time the idea for The Hunt was presented, I was tapped to tackle the new project. I had been in the writer?s room as an assistant when season two?s story was being broken, and Jeff had actually let me participate in that process. Because of that experience, I was intimately familiar with the show and I was able to craft a new but deeply intertwined story.

I had several meetings with the digital producer from MTV where we wrestled with the concept of what we were truly trying to create. It turned out that thinking of it as a game was actually very limiting for me as I was writing. In a game, the world is entirely self-contained and it?s the player?s job to figure out how to conquer that world. Usually the player is seen as some sort of intruder in a dangerous place. With a near-infinite series of choices to make and actions to take, the player tries to change that world in order to win the game. With Teen Wolf: The Hunt, the choices are very limited, there?s no world to conquer, and there?s really no way to ?win.?

When it finally clicked for me was when I stopped thinking of it as a literal game and started thinking about how to make the user feel like an unseen character in the show. My goal became to craft an experience that would make the users feel like their participation was directly connected to the narrative they saw on TV each week. Sometimes that meant getting a show character to open up a little more about their motivations in intimate conversation. Other times it meant giving the player a task within the experience that would seemingly change the course of the next episode to air. The fans really engaged with it and had a great time, so I feel like that strategy worked out really well for us.

Do you think that kind of social engagement with viewers is with us to stay?

Angela:?Absolutely. Fans take a much more active and personal role in the viewing experience now. They don?t just watch a show and then forget about it until it?s time to watch the next episode. They dissect it and re-shape it into elaborate fan fiction, creative videos, and intricate art work. They want to be heard and even to be treated as participants in the creative process. ?I think maybe these flexible interactive pieces in which fans can feel like real story participants could go a long way toward meeting those emerging needs.

What?s the status of season three?

Angela:?The writers? room is in full swing for season three and production is gearing up to begin before the end of the year. I?ll be writing episode five this season. As a staff writer now, I won?t necessarily be on set very often, which will be a very different experience for me. I?m not saying that I?m going to miss those long, cold overnight shoots in the woods. But really, I just might miss those long, cold overnight shoots in the woods. I see a few set-crashing experiences in my near future.

Thanks, Angela. Readers can check out The Hunt on the official Teen Wolf Facebook page. Want to know more about the show? Americans, roll on over to MTV.com, while viewers in Canada should check out the show?s section on MuchMusic.com.?

    Depleted Steelers beat Bengals 24-17

CINCINNATI (AP) ? The top two running backs were gone. So were two offensive linemen. Safety Troy Polamalu was sitting on the bench along with all those other injured Steelers.

So, what exactly did Pittsburgh have left? A determined defense. Some reserve running backs. And Ben Roethlisberger.

    That's enough, especially in Cincinnati.

Roethlisberger threw for a touchdown, and Pittsburgh's defense clamped down on the Bengals' Dalton-to-Green connection for a 24-17 victory Sunday night that got the Steelers back into the thick of the AFC North race.

For the Steelers (3-3), it was a significant win under tough conditions. Their first road victory of the season moved them into second place behind Baltimore (5-2), which lost to Houston 43-13 earlier Sunday.

"It puts us right there in the hunt," safety Ryan Clark said.

A lot of players got them there on a tough night.

Third-year running back Jonathan Dwyer made his first career start and ran for a career-high 122 yards, including a 32-yard gain in the final minute that put it away. Shaun Suisham kicked field goals of 42, 47 and 42 yards. And the defense came up with a game-turning interception.

"It was a back-against-the-wall mentality and you've got to fight your way out," said cornerback Ike Taylor, who helped limit Pro Bowl receiver A.J. Green to one catch.

Cincinnati (3-4) wasted yet another chance to show it deserved to be considered up there with the division's two most successful teams. The Bengals fell to 0-6 against the Steelers and Ravens over the last two seasons, a sign they are still an also-ran in their division.

They have lost three straight, falling into third place in the division.

"It's going to be tough to sleep," Bengals cornerback Leon Hall said. "At the end of the day, we've lost three in a row and we're in a tough spot."

This was their best chance yet to break through, especially after the Steelers dropped passes, fumbled and threw an end zone interception in a self-destructive first half. They couldn't take full advantage against the team that always seems to win on their home field.

The Steelers improved to 12-2 at Paul Brown Stadium, where thousands of towel-waving fans make them feel at home. They have won their last five overall against their Ohio River rival and 10 of the last 12.

And once again, the Bengals could blame themselves.

Andy Dalton's slip-out-of-the-hand interception set up Roethlisberger's 9-yard touchdown pass to Heath Miller and a tying 2-point conversion to the tight end with 24 seconds left in the half. Chris Rainey's 11-yard touchdown run put the Steelers ahead early in the fourth quarter, and the injury fill-ins finished them off.

"I'm proud of the way those young guys stepped up," said Roethlisberger, who was 27 of 37 for 278 yards. "There never was a doubt they would do that."

The Bengals got the better of it at the outset, pulling ahead 14-3 by getting their running game moving behind BenJarvus Green-Ellis and turning a fumble by Roethlisberger into a touchdown. If they were going to end that streak of futility against the Steelers, this was their chance.

Dalton's only glaring mistake made the difference.

He saw a defender waiting to make an interception and tried to stop his throwing motion. The ball slipped out of his hand, hit the helmet of Bengals lineman Kevin Zeitler and deflected to linebacker LaMarr Woodley at the Cincinnati 29-yard line with 1:23 left in the half. That set up Roethlisberger's tying TD pass and conversion.

"You can't have a thing like that happen," Dalton said. "We had a chance to go down and score points or at least keep it where it was. What you can't let happen is not just let the ball slip out of your hands, but let them get an interception and get points."

Dalton was 14 of 28 for only 105 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He threw six passes toward Green but completed only one, an 8-yard touchdown after Roethlisberger's fumble.

The Steelers' 31st-ranked running game was missing Rashard Mendenhall and Isaac Redman, as well as center Maurkice Pouncey and right tackle Marcus Gilbert. Rookie Mike Adams made his first start in Gilbert's spot.

Plus, Polamalu was inactive for the fourth time in the last five games with a calf injury.

That put a lot on Roethlisberger, who usually does well in his home state ? 15-2 all-time in Cleveland and Cincinnati ? but has rarely been so short-handed.

    Didn't matter.

"On the road, which is big for us, in this hostile environment ? I can't say enough about it," Roethlisberger said.

Notes: Steelers rookie NT Alameda Ta'amu served the first of his two-game suspension for his arrest last weekend. ... Bengals rookie CB Dre Kirkpatrick was inactive for the seventh game. He hurt his left knee over the summer and hasn't played. He's expected to be ready after the Bengals' upcoming bye week. ... Bengals C Jeff Faine injured a hamstring, forcing rookie Trevor Robinson to take over in the second half. ... The Steelers wasted a chance to score off a trick play in the first half. Roethlisberger threw a lateral to Antonio Brown, who threw a pass to uncovered running back Baron Batch. The ball went through his arms. Roethlisberger then threw an end zone interception.

    Lance Armstrong's epic downfall | WQAD.com ? Quad Cities News ...

(CNN) ? His reputation is in tatters, the cycling victories that made him a legend are wiped away, and the sponsors that gave him enormous wealth have fled faster than a downhill race to a finish line. But that?s only the beginning.

Lance Armstrong is also being asked to pay back millions of dollars. And the term ?Armstrong era? is now apparently a moniker for widespread cheating.

The epic downfall of cycling?s star, once an idolized icon of millions around the globe, stands out in the history of professional sports.

His latest and biggest plunge came Monday when the International Cycling Union stripped the 41-year-old of his seven Tour de France titles.

?Lance Armstrong has no place in cycling,? said the union?s president, Pat McQuaid, announcing that Armstrong is also banned from the sport.

The decision followed this month?s finding by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency that there is ?overwhelming? evidence Armstrong was involved as a professional cyclist in ?the most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program.?

McQuaid said he was ?sickened? by the report.

But he emphasized, ?Cycling has a future.?

In a statement, the union wrote, ?Today?s young riders do not deserve to be branded or tarnished by the past or to pay the price for the Armstrong era.?

The group, which officially goes by its French name Union Cycliste Internationale, or UCI, is the cycling?s world governing body.

Following the union?s announcement, the French Cycling Federation said it was reissuing its call for Armstrong to return 2.95 million euros ? nearly $4 million ? that he collected for winning the tours.

And SCA Promotions, a Texas insurance company that covered a big bonus Armstrong was paid for on one of his Tour de France wins, wants its money back, too.

The company didn?t give a figure in its statement Monday, but Sports Illustrated has reported that SCA once paid Armstrong $7.5 million.

Getting the money back would be a vindication for the company, which had tried to withhold a $5 million bonus due to Armstrong, citing reports that he had doped. Armstrong fought back, and SCA ? after a battle in 2005 ? had to pay not only the $5 million but also attorneys? costs and fees, Sports Illustrated reported.

One of the sponsors that hadn?t yet given up on Armstrong also dropped out Monday.

He was once ?a symbol of possibility,? Oakley ? which has outfitted him in sunglasses and other gear ? said in a statement, adding that it looks ?forward with hope to athletes and teams of the future who will rekindle that inspiration by racing clean, fair and honest.?

Heavyweights such as Nike, RadioShack and Anheuser-Busch have already fled team Lance, though, like Oakley, they?ve vowed to continue supporting the Lance Armstrong Foundation, which fights cancer through a program widely known as Livestrong.

Armstrong does get to keep one prized possession from his Tour de France days. The Amaury Sport Organisation, which runs the 21-day tour, told CNN it will not ask him to return the yellow jerseys he won.

Throughout it all, Armstrong has resolutely maintained his innocence. At an event Sunday, he did not refer to the controversy directly but said it?s been ?an interesting and at times very difficult few weeks.?

?People ask me a lot how are you doing,? he told participants in his foundation?s annual Ride for the Roses in Austin, Texas. ?And I tell them I?ve been better, but I?ve also been worse.?

Though in the past he has often tweeted angry responses against those who accused him of doping, Armstrong has remained uncharacteristically quiet in recent days. He had no immediate public statement Monday.

His attorneys did not immediately respond to CNN?s requests for comment Monday, and the foundation said it would not make a statement.

Armstrong?s story ? that of an outspoken cancer survivor who tamed the grueling three-week race more than any other cyclist before or since ? had made him a household name. But allegations of doping long dogged his career.

    Then came the USADA finding.

The agency announced it would ban Armstrong from the sport for life and strip him of his results dating from 1998. The decision wiped out 14 years of his career. McQuaid said Monday the cycling union would not appeal USADA?s decision.

McQuaid, speaking at a news conference, said he does not believe cycling will ever be free from doping, because ?I don?t think in any aspect of society there are no cheats. I do believe that doping can be hugely reduced.?

The keys are education programs and how teams are structured, he said.

Monday?s news conference turned somewhat contentious as reporters asked whether the cycling union had looked the other way for years despite growing allegations of widespread doping in the sport. Armstrong had made two donations to the union for anti-doping technology.

McQuaid insisted his organization never ignored the concerns raised about possible doping. And he wrote off any suggestion that Armstrong?s contributions had led the organization to make any decision on the issue.

?The UCI has tested Lance Armstrong 218 times. If Lance Armstrong was able to beat the system, then the responsibility for addressing that rests not only with the UCI but also with? the anti-doping agencies that accepted the results, the cycling union said in its statement.

The International Olympic Committee also is reviewing the evidence and could revoke Armstrong?s bronze medal from the 2000 Sydney Games.

The cycling union will meet later this week to discuss whether to award the seven Tour de France titles ? from 1999 to 2005 ? to another rider.

The group?s announcement Monday leaves Greg LeMond as the only American to win the tour. He did so in 1986, 1989 and 1990.

U.S. cyclist Floyd Landis was stripped of his 2006 Tour de France victory in 2010.

In the past, Armstrong has argued that he took more than 500 drug tests and never failed. In its 202-page report, the USADA said it had tested Armstrong less than 60 times and the International Cycling Union conducted about 215 tests.

?Thus the number of actual controls on Mr. Armstrong over the years appears to have been considerably fewer than the number claimed by Armstrong and his lawyers,? the USADA said.

The agency didn?t say that Armstrong ever failed one of those tests, but his former teammates testified as to how they beat tests or avoided the test administrators altogether. Several riders also said team officials seemed to know when random drug tests were coming, the report said.

Armstrong stepped down last week as chairman of his foundation but said he will continue to be involved. Some of the foundation?s donors are furious over the scandal and want their money back.

?We will not be deterred,? Armstrong said Friday night at the organization?s 15th anniversary celebration in Austin. ?We will move forward.?

Controversial ?voter fraud is a felony? ads come down

Clear Channel is removing more than 100 of these billboards. (Fox6now.com)The 140 billboards warning residents of inner-city neighborhoods in Wisconsin and Ohio that they could go to jail for committing voter fraud are being taken down Monday. The move comes after the private family foundation funding them declined to make its identity known.

Civil rights groups criticized the ads as an attempt to intimidate voters in primarily low-income, minority neighborhoods by associating voting with jail time. The billboards?show a large gavel and the text "Voter fraud is a felony! Up to 3 1/2 yrs & $10,000 Fine."

Clear Channel, the company that put up the advertisements, said the foundation funding the signs was mistakenly allowed to remain anonymous when it bought the billboards, a violation of the company's policy against accepting anonymous political ads.

"We reviewed the situation and in light of the fact that these?billboards violate our policy of not accepting anonymous political ads,?we asked the client how they would prefer to work with us to bring the?boards into conformance with our policy," Clear Channel spokesman Jim Cullinan wrote in an email. "The client thought the best?solution was to take?the boards down, so we're in the process of removing them."

Cullinan would not comment about whether the foundation will still have to pay for its full contract, which asked for the billboards to run until Election Day, Nov. 6.

Republicans have led the controversial efforts to curb voter fraud this year, as Democrats argue that voter ID laws, tighter regulations on voter registration drives, and efforts to roll back early voting tend to depress turnout and hurt Democratic candidates. Civil rights groups argue that voter fraud is so rare?two recent elections have shown a fraud rate of 0.00004 percent?that it's not worth instating voter ID rules that could discourage legitimate voters.

Supporters of the laws argue that it makes sense to tighten the rules around voting to protect the integrity of elections.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that 15 new billboards will go up this week in Cleveland that say, "Voting is a right, not a crime." Clear Channel will donate 10 of them, and the Cleveland City Council is financing the other five. The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law will also donate a few dozen billboards to run in Columbus and Cleveland that read, "Stand up and have your say?Vote. When we vote, we are all equal."

Acer see sales decline in Q3 2012 as customers hold out for Windows 8

Acer has reported a net profit of NT$68 million ($2.3 million) for Q3 of this year, ducking far below many estimates for the Taipei computer maker. According to Reuters, the company isn't offering up any reasons why profits disappointed just yet, and it plans to hold a briefing on Thursday to add more detail on the figures and its outlook. The reported results, currently unavailable direct from Acer, note that consolidated revenue in the third quarter was down 5.6 percent since Q2, although its after-tax profit has improved since then. It's a difficult time to be a PC maker.

Syria has a long and tumultuous history of meddling into Lebanese affairs. For much of the past 30 years, the seven-times-smaller Lebanon has lived under Syrian military and political domination. Since the uprising against President Bashar Assad began in February 2011, Lebanon has been steadily drawn into the unrest ? a troubling sign for the country with political parties rooted in various Christian and Muslim sects, many of which are armed. (AP) ? Lebanese security forces are setting up road blocks and cordoning off Beirut's central Martyrs' Square ahead of a public funeral for a top intelligence official who was assassinated in a massive car bombing.

Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan was killed along with seven others Friday in an attack that many blame on Syria. He was in charge of an investigation over the summer that led to the arrest of a Syrian-allied Lebanese politician over what authorities called a plot by Damascus to provoke chaos with bombings and assassinations.

The probe was an embarrassing blow to Syria, which has long acted with impunity in Lebanon.

Giant posters of al-Hassan were set up around Beirut ahead of Sunday's funeral calling him a "martyr of sovereignty and independence."

(AP) ? She dreamed a dream, and it came true. But what happened next for Susan Boyle?

The middle-aged church volunteer from a small town in Scotland became an instant global celebrity in 2009 with her heart-stopping rendition of the "Les Miserables" number "I Dreamed a Dream" on a TV talent show.

A week is a long time in showbiz ? and in our hyper-speed online age three and a half years is an eternity ? but Boyle is still going strong. She has sold millions of records, received an honorary doctorate, sung for Pope Benedict XVI and performed in Las Vegas. A stage musical about her life has played to enthusiastic crowds across Britain and is headed for Australia, and next month she releases her fourth album, "Standing Ovation."

But the 51-year-old singer who entered the TV talent contest to make her late mother proud is remarkably unchanged. She's still a bit frumpy, though she's acquired a new hairdo, more expensive clothes and a makeover. She still lives in her down-at-heel home town, has outbursts of anger and struggles to overcome her nerves before live performances.

It's a fairy tale, yes, but with dark shadows lurking in the corners.

"People can't accept that you can dream a dream, but part of the dream is also a nightmare," said Elaine C. Smith, a Scottish actress who knows Boyle and plays her in the biographical stage show "I Dreamed a Dream."

"Fairy dust comes out, but shrapnel comes out as well."

Boyle now has a car and chauffeur to take her to appointments, but she sticks close to familiar places and routines. She has bought a new house, a modern four-bedroom two-story in Blackburn that cost 300,000 pounds ($480,000), but locals say she often stays in the modest row house she grew up in.

And she still shows up occasionally to sing karaoke at The Crown pub.

"She belts them out like she used to and is not averse to a duet," said 20-year-old local Helen Cameron. "It's nice that this has not changed her. I think she's under a lot of pressure normally. Here she can be herself."

As well as having the support of her community, Boyle is well protected by her manager, Andy Stephens, and a close circle of friends and family ? a factor that helps act as a "psychological vaccine" against the pressures of sudden fame, according to Cary Cooper, professor of psychology and health at Lancaster University.

"If you don't have the proper social support system to protect you, your celebrity status can cause you enormous stress," said Cooper, who has studied the relationship between celebrity and stress. "She is still rooted in her friends and people who know her. Most celebrities aren't."

Boyle's life changed in a few minutes when her first appearance on "Britain's Got Talent" was broadcast in April 2009. The soaring voice emerging from the dowdy, frizzy-haired figure; the audience titters turning to gasps; the shocked faces of Simon Cowell and the other judges ? it was artfully staged television, but also a moment of genuine emotion.

"We judged her. Anybody who says they didn't is telling lies," Smith said. "She walked on and opened her mouth, and within minutes everybody watching was in tears."

The Internet clip went around the world, and keeps on going. On YouTube alone it has been viewed more than 106 million times.

Boyle's first album, "I Dreamed a Dream," topped both the U.K. and U.S. charts. So did her second, "The Gift."

Although Boyle's covers of pop classics and musical theater standards rarely make critics swoon, her three albums collectively have sold more than 14 million copies.

This month she's sung on "Dancing With the Stars" in the U.S. and performed in Las Vegas with Donny Osmond, a childhood idol.

It's a long way from Boyle's home town of Blackburn, a community of about 5,000 people 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of Edinburgh that lies in one of Britain's most deprived areas.

The youngest of nine children of a devout Roman Catholic family, Boyle had learning difficulties as a child, the result of oxygen deprivation at birth. She struggled in school and was bullied by other children.

She left school with few qualifications, never married ? though she later said she'd exaggerated in telling the "Britain's Got Talent" judges she'd "never been kissed" ? and spent years caring for her widowed mother, Bridget, who died in 2007.

The thing that gave her the greatest pleasure was singing, in church or during karaoke nights at the pub.

She has said she entered "Britain's Got Talent" in memory of her late mother, "to show her I could do something with my life."

All did not all go smoothly after her astonishing debut. During the final stages of the competition she got into a dustup with two reporters.

Although she was widely expected to win the 100,000 pound ($160,000) prize, she ended up coming second to dance troupe Diversity. After the series ended, she checked into the Priory, rehab clinic to the stars, to be treated for nervous exhaustion.

She still has outbursts of temper, and has said she still suffers anxiety when singing live before audiences.

"When I first went for 'Britain's Got Talent' I had such a feeling of failure and that's still part of me," Boyle said in an interview last year with the Daily Mail newspaper. "It's hard when that's been the pattern of your life. It's hard to believe those patterns have been broken."

Smith said Boyle's struggles ? reflected in the bittersweet tone of the stage show ? disappoint some of the singer's fans.

"They want the dream to come true and her life to be perfect," she said.

But Smith said Boyle's flaws are part of what makes her a star. After all, "you didn't love Judy Garland because she was perfect."

"This is a woman who is conquering the real fears she has," Smith said.
