Theaters in Colorado Springs are working with the police department to provide extra security in the wake of the shooting in Aurora that have killed 12 people and wounded 59 others.
Tinseltown at Cheyenne Mountain Boulevard and the Cinemark IMAX theater at First & Main on Powers Boulevard always have off-duty police officers acting as security guards on the weekend, said police spokeswoman Barbara Miller. But they have decided to increase the police presence at both theaters after the shootings.
Calls to Cinemark?s corporate office went unreturned. Miller did not have immediate information about security at Hollywood Theaters at Interquest Parkway or the Carmike Cinema at Chapel Hills Drive. Calls to Hollywood and Carmike?s corporate offices also went unreturned.
The police department started making the rounds at local theaters after news of the shootings spread. The gunman, James E. Holmes, opened fire shortly after the start of the midnight showing of the latest Batman franchise,?Dark Knight Rises.
The local police department responded to the shootings in Aurora by increasing patrol checks at the city?s movie theaters. Friday afternoon, the police sent a crime prevention officer or patrol officer to meet with theater managers to discuss extra duty officers and basic security precautions.
?Over the course of the next few days, Crime Prevention Officers will follow up at each theater with a more formal response, focusing on the type of incident that occurred in Aurora,? Miller said.
