Android extends lead in smartphone market

The Android operating system continued to dominate in 2012, largely because of the success of Samsung.

CNN reports that Android's share of the market was 68.8 percent last year and that Apple's iOS system had an 18.8 percent share.

Overall, the number of phone sales in 2012 fell 1.7 percent from the previous year, according to the report. It was the first drop since 2009.
