Google supplied MCV with an alphabetised list of the Top 10 console video game queries from January 1st to December 11th 2012. The list mostly consists of quarter four releases, with a few surprises, let?s take a look.

  • Assassin's Creed 3
  • Black Ops 2
  • Borderlands 2
  • FIFA 12
  • FIFA 13
  • GTA 5
  • Halo 4
  • Mass Effect 3
  • Skylanders
  • Skyrim

What is interesting is that four out of the 10 titles were NOT released in quarter four; these are Mass Effect 3, GTA V, FIFA 12 and Skyrim. Mass Effect 3 was released in March 2012 and GTA 5 is due next year.

We of course had the massive fallout of the Mass Effect 3 ending that had gamers in a frenzy and GTA 5 seems to be one of the most anticipated games this decade.

Even more interesting is that FIFA 12 was released in September 2011 and Skyrim in November 2011, yet these two titles still featured under the top 10 downloads for 2012. The longevity of FIFA 12 and Skyrim is astounding.

Another noteworthy mention is the inclusion of Skylanders. As MCV pointed out, ?The toy-game crossover has been a retail phenomenon, making more money than any other game in the first five months of this year.? This indicates the massive potential in the casual gaming sector within the video games market.

The list is limited to only console game searches and does not reflect the overall 2012 video game trends. Popular mobile game Angry Birds and free-to-play PC title League of Legends would probably also be on the list if the search included all platforms.
